75 CB400F Simple wiring?? Convert to kickstart only??
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:43:42 PM »
Recently acquired a project bike.  Amongst many other things I'm looking to redo the wiring on this bike.  Unfortunatley the wiring harness is completely thrashed.  On the plus side it did come with a Dyna S upgrade.  I don't mind building my own wiring harness, but I'm having some difficulty finding a simplified wiring diagram.  Does anyone have or know where to find a simplified wiring diagram for the starting system, ignition system, lighting system and/or charging system?  I'm not opposed to just going to a kick start only system *gasp* to simplify things more.  Anyone have a diagram for that electrical setup?  Ultimately this will be a cafe racer style setup, but I like having options.  Thanks in advance!

Hey TX ; Here is a link to a cb750K1, http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring750K1.html . It's an interactive one so you can add and remove what you want. I believe it's the same wiring as yours (not positive though) but it should help get you going in the right direction.   ...cougar...

I believe you need the battery.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I believe you need the battery.

Yes, or a magneto or a huge capacitor. A small battery will work.

wow txboarder.. your CB400F sounds almost identicle to the condition of my CB550F... my wiring harness too was completely trashed... put a photo on here of it earlier... but yeah, i wouldnt consider any part of the wiring harness to be reusable so im building one from scratch as well...

also, i was planning to make mine kickstart only as well, but am wiring it to have the electric starter as an option, should anything happen to me where it would make kickstarting rather difficult

this is the wiring diagram im going by.. however, im using the diagram for the CB550F... not sure what the difference is, but heres the link to the CB400F version of the same diagram im using... i havent gotten too far yet since im still wanting to get a seat and tank put on first so i can install the LED tail light and turn signals before completing the bulk of the wiring

What I would do is how i go about wiring. I separate the whole loom, no tape no nothing, all bare. Clean it with acetone so your hands arent all gummy and then stare at it like Fcuk......what was i thinking......

Then start tracing your wiring to where it came from and goes and basically take the wires out one at a time for the systems you are deleting.

Now that it is down to bare bones just remake your own harness using it as a template and pick your wiring colors.

I like the process because even if it is a nasty hackjob it doesnt matter because you are tracing the wires functional use and determining if you still want it. Darwin award PO's be damned you will still get it nailed

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions!  Most of my problems seemed to have stemmed from the fact that I didn't realize there was a set of aftermarket controls on the bike in addition to the stock controls (still scratching my head on that one).  After I finally realized that fact a lot of things fell into place.  Thanks again everyone. I think for the time being I'll be wiring up the bike bare bones race day style.  I need to get the bike wired up enough to be able to run the engine and do some mechanical troubleshooting.  No keys, no turn signals or brake lights (or any lights really).  Anything I need to look out for in regards to the neutral indicator or starting vlutvh or anything like that?  Thanks again guys.

I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert on your bike, I more or less get by on my 750.

I think that you DONT have a neutral safety, starter safety switch setup on your bike. I can deff be wrong tho but in that respect you have to search and IF you do, delete it from the circuit, per your desired setup

Its only a couple wires, it sounds more daunting than it is. that is of course I'm totally wrong and it doesn't exist on your bike

That oldmanhonda diagram is nice but has alot of stuff you dont need if your going simple
stator 3'y to 3'y rectifier
"white to volt reg white
rectifer green tied to volt reg green to ground
recitifer red an key switch red to battery positive 15-20 amp inline bus fuse
volt reg black pigtail to running light  further up frame pigtail to brake light switch- pigtail for coils  end of black to 3(off low hi) position toggle switch for headlight
second wire off brake light switch back to brake light wire
green off headlight frame ground

an for push start button starter to one side silenoid other to battery positive  wires off silenoid I think they are green/red an yellow/red  green to frame ground yellow to one side of push start other side to black ignition

Luap pretty much says what I was going to.
Probably some of your harness can be saved. It's a pain to come up with bullet connectors to connect to coils etc so using the stock wires where you can makes some sense. If you're planning a complete rewiring that's no big deal either.
The starter is dead simple as described. If you want a neutral light just connect it to switched power and the neutral switch: it grounds in neutral to light your indicator. There's a lot of extra crap in the OEM harness so you can't try and start it in gear but just have a brain, and don't try that.
To be legal most places you just need a brake light (doesn''t need to be activated by the front brake, rear only is OK), a horn, plus a headlight and a tail-light if you go out after dark.
I would tend to want a key switch but that's up to you. Simple on/off is OK or you can get one with "start" and eliminate the extra starter switch.

OK I think I can follow that.  I definately would have preferred using the stock wiring harness lines I'm planning on keeping, but after cutting and stripping more than six inches of insulation to try and find good copper and coming up with nothing, I've relegated this project to a fresh rewire.
