steel friction plate.....which side outside ?
« on: October 20, 2012, 01:58:26 PM »
i have to change friction plates on my 500 and 750 ....

can someone tell me in which way i have to put the steel plate....???

i see that the steel plate has difference.... one side is straight/ flat and one side is curved/roundend

on 500 and 750 four the rounded side go inside and the straight go out?

there is no info on the service manual about it.....

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it matters so long as all of them are facing the same way say for instance you install the first steel plate with the sharp edged face facing the engine then install the rest the same.

what bailgang said, just stack them all the same way, deglaze the steels first and soak the new frictions in oil overnight at least.

the direction dosent matter, its the tension within the pressing being aligned,,it probably makes two fifths of #$%* all difference anyway, just an attention to detail thing, its only a disc being squished that technically should be flat both sides, the edge isnt load bearing.

Rounded edge of the steel stamped plate faces out towards the mechanic.

someone said the round edge go inside....you said it go outside (toward the mechanic).....

aniway i have the manual for both bikes... i now that i need to put a washer but my question is

all the steel plate need to be placed with the notch (arrow in the photo) in the same way or their position is not important?

i dont' speak english so my question probably are not easily understand......sorry for this....

It is very important to look closely at things that we take apart and write little notes if needed as we take it apart.

All of the notches in those clutch metal plates are the same.

line the notches up together, its good to note how things come apart like lucky said ,however sometimes because these bikes are so old and may have been apart a few times over the years by anyone they can sometimes have been assembled incorrectly or missing small pieces, study your manual aswell.

you're answer would be 100% right if i was sure that previous owners did everything carefully or if i had a bike 100% never used.....

unfortunately this for me has not yet happen

the problem is when you get bike used by guys that don't follow manual or put pieces inside in random way.....
