Sprocket bolts.
« on: November 14, 2012, 09:17:56 AM »
As I restore my '74 , I would like to know what thread angle the 12mm bolts have that attach  the sprocket to the hub. I'd like to use a acorn nuts instead. I think they're either 1.25, 1.50, 1.75?

Thanks for any help.

I think you're asking about the thread pitch which is 1.25.

Metric thread gages are available on eBay for under 10 bucks. Every tool box should have at least one. They are very handy and any kid can use one.

All you need is a good caliper for that.  First measure the diameter, than imprint the thread to a piece of paper and measure the distance between 5 threads.  Divide by 4 and there you have it.

Since no one has asked .... I will
Are you sure you will have clearance with these taller Acorn nuts?

I didn't ... but then maybe my nuts are bigger than your's.  Seriously though,  I tried putting on these nuts and they would hit the swingarm's side at the front.  The acorn nuts I found were a good 1/3" longer than the stockers.
If I moved the rear wheel all the way to the utmost rear position of it's available travel they would just clear.

No way I wanted to run with the chain already at it's max length just to be able to use these acorn nuts.

Just a thought, you might want to check.  Just buy one and try it.

If I remember correctly these were pretty expensive nuts
