16010-323-315 or K&L - 500 float bowl gasket only?
« on: November 20, 2012, 07:10:01 PM »
I removed my bowls today to see if they were clean as an annual routine check; I've had the bike for a year now. They got K&L rebuild kits a year ago when I got the bike. I apparently pinched the gasket on #3 when reinstalling and broke it (gasket). Is there a source for gaskets only vs. entire rebuild kits? K&L or OEM?

I also used it as an opportunity to replace the float bowl screws with new stainless hex head. Parts fiche says 4x12, but the originals look 4x10. Which is right? I also added a lock washer.

I'm learning every time I do something, but unfortunately it tends to involve breaking something.

Thanks. I just ordered. I had a hard enough time getting the bowls off/on that I was not looking forward to dealing with a round O-ring. I swapped mounting bolts to hex thinking a ratchet would be easier than a short screwdriver. I think I'm going to try to find a stubby screwdriver that fits, the ratchet was a hassle. And I think I'm going to get 4x10 phillips head vs. the 4x12 hex that I picked up.

The leverage that a ratchet provides would also make it extremely easy to strip out the float screws.  Screwdriver works best.   Also, determine the proper length of the screw.  If the 4x10 is shorter than stock then you are engaging fewer threads in the body, again making it easier to strip out.

Looks like my original screws are 4x10. I'm gonna replace with the same. Hopefully I haven't done any thread damage by using a ratchet and the 4x12 hex. I didn't tighten down like crazy, but I see how fragile this area is. I've removed bowls again, but I won't replace with new screws until gaskets arrive.

Any need to aid the Sirius shaped-gaskets when setting (grease, etc.) or do they stay in place ok? I assume I place them in the groove of the bowl cover and gently fit?

those one from sirius stay in the groves. Some have to be stretched just a hair . but to me they are 100% better then the round ones

Thanks again for the gasket tip luap. I got mine on yesterday and installed today. I've only done a short neighborhood trip so far, but everything seems ok. Dealing with these 500 bowls are a nightmare for me. I assume the 750 clamp style is much easier to remove/install? I finally went with some 4x12 stainless panhead screws with a lock washer. I think my original were 4x10, but I was having a hard time finding those. It's interesting that the parts fiche labels those as 4x12. Anway, between some hand-turning, turning some more with just a screwdriver bit in my hand and then finishing off with a screwdriver bit in a mini ratchet I was able to get them back on. But again, not easy.

I have one screw on my #3 bowl that would not fully tighten up. I added some blue loctite to it and will watch it. If this one will not stay tight, what are some options?

It depends look to see if that one is a blind hole or through hole. If through you have just enough room for a nut. Or drill and tap for a 5mm

Unfortunately it's one where I can't fit a nut on top. I'll see how this one does and then deal with making it a 5mm. Thanks.
