what spoke weights to stock?
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:26:50 PM »
I'm going to buy a static wheel balance stand, and would like to have a few spoke weights on hand.  Any recommendations on what weights would be most common?  Don't want to buy a pile of weights that I'll never use.  (also feel free to pass on where you buy them from too )

(I know its not expensive to have a shop do it, but its on the list of things I want to learn myself - followed by trueing up wheels ;D)

Thanks in advance for any comments!

The original spoke-crimp on style, Honda 750 K0 to K6 front & rear wheel weights (grams) were listed as:

44606-283-000 (20 G)
44607-283-000 (15 G)
44608-283-000 (10 G)
44609-283-000 (5 G)

These genuine weights are rather pricey at $5.00 to $6.00 USD (each) from David Silver, Motogrid, etc.

The 5 gram weight has been discontinued. ???

I've never done it, but have heard of guys modifying bullet style fishing weights. Many sizes/weights to choose from, and readily available.....At 5.00-6.00 U.S.D. O.E.? You can have 'm Mr. Silver. :o

Don't like tape a weights? Spoke weights pricy now, work ok,new tape a weights better finish, stick well and easier to use. Maybe not as cosmetic appealing? Bill

Tape a weights work well all right but we're not allowed to race with them, nor use the old lead solder wrap.  I've used up all my old spoke weights and have only bought a few at a dealer$$$ Must be some cheap aftermarket out there.

Thought I'd update this old post - maybe help someone in the future.....

I wanted to find OE style spoke weights rather than tape on... here's what I found:

K & L company still (?) makes them:(although looking in their 2013 catalog, not listed anymore, discontinued?)  At least with these part numbers you can search for them online or ebay etc.

HONDA    ---------------          K&L
44607-283-000 (15 G)    -   32-3989
44608-283-000 (10 G)    -   32-3988
44609-283-000 (5 G)      -   32-3987

They come in bags of 10 -  I bought a bag of 10g from ebay for 21.00

Thanks for the tip.

Are they still made out of lead?

I got a handful of nice, shiny chrome-plated spoke weights from the local Harley dealer for free, but they were a little too large in diameter. When i tried to crimp them down, they just cracked in half! They were made of pot metal!

Dyna Beads, I have a couple of crimp-on spoke weights to use to get and idea of how much weight to bring the wheel into balance and then I remove the weight and pour an equivalent amount of beads into the valve.  I like the look of weightless rims, a much cleaner look.  And for spokeless rims the beads are a must as I hate the look of tape weight on a polished or painted aluminum rim.  Just MHO  :-X
