thanks NobleHops. I am enjoying your 400 thread.

after riding another 10 miles yesterday I have a leak at the stator/tranny cover. when they were off I noticed a large blob of red rtv around the stator wiring seal. that will be addressed when I get that chrome stator cover from cycle x and get the other covers transferred. I also noticed there seems to be an overall lack of power. 5th gear 4000 rpms is generally 60mph give or take a few (with 17t/48t sprockets) compared to my K1 engine and F3 engine. now its 5th gear 5000 rpms to get 60mph. thats way off.

the clutch seems to be letting out all the way, and I have not revved her up enough to see if its slipping. the whole clutch assembly (clutch basket and plates) came out of my k1 and dropped into the 75f engine because there were no clutch plates. should I be putting the clutch plates into the 75f clutch basket? maybe there is a shim of difference that isn't providing full friction? I also noticed my k1 clutch springs seem lighter (skinnier) than the springs in the 75f engine. like I said I used all of the clutch components from the k1 engine. there has to be a correlation here. I DO have new metal and cork plates, and HD springs from cycle x waiting, I could try to build a new clutch...thoughts?

still have to transfer my shorty shocks (i feel like a putz on this towering bike). the only other issue I have is my tach seal is weeping so I ordered two (one 1979 dohc and one standard) because I read the DOHC tach seal is slightly bigger and seals better. I have one of each to try.

my new coil arrived yesterday. I ordered it sunday, it shipped out monday and arrived tuesday. I couldn't believe it! so what happened with the coil? well my blade connectors weren't fitting onto the coil. its this model by the way you can see on the left side the two blade connectors. well my blade female connectors from the wiring weren't tight enough so I soldered my connections on ages ago. no problem. the problem was in order to take them off the old frame I had to desolder them. too much heat for too long and on the other side of the tab (plastic housing) it was desoldered internally. bummer. so I cut into the housing carefully until the end of that wire was exposed and resoldered it to a new wire with a blade connector coming out of the coil, and filled in the whole thing with epoxy. I was careful not to cut too far into the coil to even see any windings or such. now there are TWO blade connectors and the chances are extremely high that the other one got desoldered too. here is my dilemma, should I try to do that same procedure to fix it or not BECAUSE when I test for ohms across the spark plug leads at the bottom of the coil I get no reading. no continuity. on a working coil it is 18ohms and settles down to 13 after a little bit. on the broken coil there is no reading of any kind. logic points to the fact that there is something else going on inside and fixing that desoldered part won't fix the coil. any insight?

hey Johnie, just noticed you posted here! sorry about that. yes I think I am all healed up. I didn't have too much body damage from the accident, just some bruises on my right side. still a bit of mental anguish if I see a car stopped on the right of me waiting to turn into my lane. I try to just stay in the left lane and keep my eyes peeled like potatoes.

I am taking her to the tag office to get re-inspected and tagged since its a "new" bike with a new frame. tach seal leak is gone, since I added a new seal from the DOHC version which is just a hair larger.

still need to add my banjo bolt brake switch and put in the new brake caliper seal/fix the front brake. chrome stator cover should be coming from cycle x this week or next week along with the left side cover gaskets to eliminate some seepage there. put the cycle x clutch kit in and it's not slipping but it's shuddering a little on take-off. I did not put the new springs in but am going to try that to see if it helps or makes the problem worse. its only when taking off in first, and only if I use light throttle. if I rev it up and take off there is no issue. anyway that's the update.

an update, both good and bad. the bad first, my bike is still not running properly. I am getting 30 miles to the gallon with the same driving style that used to get me 40+ mpg. I am kinda stuck, there is gas getting by the carbs into the engine because my intake boots are slightly wet...BUT the floats are not set too high, and all of my hoses and passageways in the carbs are clean. the fuel does NOT come out of the overflow but somehow it's getting through to the engine.....kinda got me stuck.

the good: I am rebuilding my original K1 engine. got up to see Bill Benton today and get some help. He helped guide me taking the engine apart and we had it apart in about 2.5 hours. I have never even seen the inside of an engine in person let alone take one apart. he said things look really good. it confirms the suspected "10k" miles on the odometer when I got it....it seems to be original. when I got in my wreck the engine pretty much busted apart in a few areas, and the cases are scrap metal. the only thing salvageable are the rods and kickstart gear mechanism. Bill has a set of early cases I will be using. the plan is to get the top end rebuilt to fresh stock standards. not wanting much in the way of performance upgrades, just want to reset her clock to 0, I plan on keeping this bike for a long time!

one of these o-rings was crushed in on the side. about the only really funky looking thing.

























things came apart fairly easy. the head actually pulled right off without having to use anything to hammer or pry. Bill thought that was funny and called me a lucky f'er ;) the cylinder took a little persuasion, and the cases a little persuasion as well, but since we aren't saving them we got a little frisky with the deadblow hammer. Bill showed me all the parts and we inspected some. He will be looking at the case bearings to make sure they match up. This isn't going to be a quick process because of my other project (cb450) which has an actual deadline, but I really want to get this rebuilt and dropped in Yolanda. will keep this thread alive, even if it is slow going. thanks for reading guys!

done and done.

I got my chrome stator cover from cycle x back. they did not have one in stock so they actually sent mine out for chroming. the one you sent me stev-o! looks great. .got my chrome tranny cover on too and new gaskets. took my stator coils out of the broken engine because they had the perfect rubber gasket piece that my current engine was lacking hence the leakage. glad to have a dry left foot now, not to mention the engine looks more balanced to me with the contrast of paint vs chrome. very happy

that's the plan Ed, using cam, cam towers, rockers, whole lower end too. its all in great condition. just want to get the bores fresh and new piston rings, maybe some valve and light porting work. not after speed, just a good solid motor. I am excited about it and am honestly kicking myself for not getting started. after Bill showed me in person it seems SO much easier to take apart than in my head, I built it up to be so scary that I didn't want to go near it......now that I understand it. those japanese engineers were geniuses to get all of that stuff so compact in there working. I could stare at the parts for hours.

Thanks Tige, I am generally not a big fan of chrome. I think seeing so much on HDs kinda turns me off, but I really enjoy the contrast at the bottom of the bike to break up the paint. I have thought about a chrome cam cover too but it might be too much. also I think it helps balance the engine from left to right since the points cover and clutch adjuster cover are already chromed. when doing projects in general whether it be a bike or guitar I try to keep thing aesthetically balanced and contrasted. hopefully I will be able to show that more with my F3 project :D

can't wait to see the addition, that is a killer bike man, as if Honda made a streetable racer 750 ;)
