Repairing a broken post in a carb-ideas please.
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:08:30 AM »
This is not a SOHC4 carb but one off a 1964 Honda CM90. Someone lost a screw and decided a big ass screw would do, thus braking the post it went in to. It's actually the center post that a screw goes in to which is a built into the carb fuel tap. You'll see what happened in the pictures below. There was a thread for repairing the main jet holder using a 45 calibre shell casing. I was thinking if I can retap the threads that may be left, use a short length of brass tubing over the post for strength, screw the right screw in, then fill in around It with JB Weld, let it set over night then back the screw out that there may be enough to hold the screw in place. Or, put the brass tube over the post, fill the whole thing with JB Weld, let it set, then drill a hole and tap it. Or, just forget it and try to find another carb.
Any help or other ideas gratefully accepted.
Thanks, Cliff.

Ooh, that's kinda nasty.  I guess repairs would be possible, IMO I think I would shop around for a replacement first, but I'm all for the easy way out..

Looks like you got nothing to lose if you try it.
I fixed a broken float post on my '73 CB500 with JB an its been good since July.  I ride it daily.

I vote for the brass sleeve filled with JB.  Screw the screw in after coating it with wax or oil to keep the JB from bonding to it.  Be sure you clean the area that the JB bonds to down to shiny metal.

Jim is the man. That would have to be filled and tapped if that sheet metal screw hasn't ruined the bowl. What mess. And.....JB Weld won't last.
