@brandEn - :o NO, not in Cabo.   Mainland, yeah.  i wont go back.  I really want to see the ruins and see all the other cool isht MX has to offer, but because of the corruption and crime on mainland, we keep to baja.  Cabo in particular.  many tourists do die every year for various reasons.  all over mexico.  I was almost one of them a few years back.  you get to the outskirts of any city, or off the beaten track, and it could happen.  retirement aged parents of a good buddy of mine built a house in cabo. they  live there 4 months out of the year.
All the towns on Baja Penin. are pretty isolated, and are really reliant on the resort/tourism/sportfishing industry.  There is nothing else as far as work out there.  they'd be effing themselves if crime affected tourism.   I've never felt in danger, even with my wife and kids between the airport and the resort/town.... this will be our 11th trip in 13 years.
Theres even a Walmart and a Costco in Cabo  ;D and yes....its safe to drink the water, I just prefer the free flowing cheap drinks  ;D
some of the bet tequilas and rums can be had from $9-$20.  we'd pay 4x that here in the states.
At least 2 bottles returning with me.

I have been to Cabo once and PV once. While I really enjoyed both trips and LOVE the food, drinks, weather, beaches, and culture I am very hesitant to go back because of all the #$%* going down lately. I will just go to Hawaii. But I agree, you are probably safe. Hopefully...

Hey Box, aren't you afraid of getting raped by the cartel? Mexico scares me.

I've never been raped by a Cartel before, does it hurt more than a normal raping? Georg (Fire113) flys to mexico from Germany every few weeks because he can get flights to Mexico for only a few bucks, and to my knowledge he hasn't been raped yet, but he's German, so he'd probably enjoy it anyway............

I'm drinking Jameson and cola as I type this, but I think I'll peruse the Cuban rum isle at Dan Murphy's tomorrow, and I might have to buy a cigar while I'm at it, I gave up cigarettes a year ago next month, but I'm sure that ceegars are perfectly safe, yeah? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yeah, I got an email from them about that. replied back that I want the green wax 101 Makers back, not less. 3% less is NOT going to have that much of an impact on availability! Wish they had never been bought out and gone corporate. The Samuels family lost all control.

There is some legitimacy about supply and demand. They are a small operation with a single limestone lake/spring water source and thus limited storage/aging facilities. I just hope they do not cut back on the aging!! That'll kill it.

Price reductions are not done. I did some looking and Beam is the best selling Bourbon in the World. Jack Daniels is a Tennessee and actually ships huge quantities.

As Jerry pointed out Makers is a pretty small operation compared to Beam. Interestingly Makers was never aged for any specific time period. It is done by tasters who deem it ready. The average is 6-7 years.

When the family decided to come up a with a recipe, they did not have the resources to distill test batches. They made bread, the best tasting bread became recipe.

Historically, Bourbon was dead in the 1940's and 50's. Prohibition had killed off production, and during WWII the Distilleries were only making Ethanol for the War effort.

When the war ended it takes time to make a decent Whiskey so the market was flooded with Scotch and Canadian hootch that was in the pipeline before the war. Bourbon made a slow comeback and finally gained some market share.

Finally Americans and the rest of the civilized World came to their senses. The Japanese are crazy for Makers. When Makers Gold was taken off the market, every case was shipped to Japan.

Bobby's got this #$%* down. The wax for the 101 was GOLD. Thanks, it's been too long. Bill Samuels was a customer of mine in the Rite Aid drug store I was working in briefly in Prospect, KY (Louisville, KY suburb). I had the opportunity one night to speak with him so I asked him if he was 'that' Bill Samuels that makes that product that was so near and dear to my heart. He chuckled, said yes, so we chatted a little bit. Circa 1997'ish?? I suggested 2 things to him 1) that they make the 101 again and he told me what Bobby said - they still do but they ship it to all the wealthy Japanese and 2) they should bottle straight barrel Makers because WE'D (Americans) would pay whatever their asking price might be. The 'corporation' dilemma came up with those ideas and he wasn't able to make those decisions anymore. About a month later a nicely dressed lady comes to the pharmacy and asks if there is a Jerry working and I said that would be me. She then handed me a small brown paper bag and said "Bill asked that I give this to you". To my surprise there was a 375ml bottle of barrel Maker's from a taste testing when they checked it for readiness. 115._ proof!! THE very best whiskey I have ever had!! When I headed to Palau for a diving trip in 2005 I was routed through Osaka, JP with an overnight layover. I contacted Makers to see where I might find the 101 to stock up. I was informed at that time that it had been totally discontinued a few years prior. I'd also speculate that the new Makers 46, for which a 750ml bottle is priced like a 1.75L bottle of regular Makers,  has created the majority of the diversion.  That's good #$%*, SMOOTH, but it ain't no barrel Makers!!

Evan Williams or Jack Daniels on the rocks.  I keep the bottle refridgerated i the lil magic box.  I also drink Captain Morgan rum, all varieties straightup room temp or on the rocks.  sometimes mixed with cola or orange drink.
I have in the past drank FightingCock and its rough.  Jim Beam makes me vomit just to smell it.  I do love the flavor of Black Velvet.
oh and the greatest of em all...............straight up MoonShine corn whiskey.

I'm hovering betwixt Chivas and dry, and Jameson's and dry tonight. I probably shouldn't because it gave me indigestion last night (the ginger ale, not the scotch) but I've got some Gaviscon tonight, so I'm good. Winners are grinners! ;D

Breaking Makers Mark news!!
« Reply #194 on: February 17, 2013, 04:26:24 PM »
Dear Ambassador,

Since we announced our decision last week to reduce the alcohol content (ABV) of Maker’s Mark in response to supply constraints, we have heard many concerns and questions from our ambassadors and brand fans. We’re humbled by your overwhelming response and passion for Maker’s Mark. While we thought we were doing what’s right, this is your brand – and you told us in large numbers to change our decision.

You spoke. We listened. And we’re sincerely sorry we let you down.

So effective immediately, we are reversing our decision to lower the ABV of Maker’s Mark, and resuming production at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof). Just like we’ve made it since the very beginning.

The unanticipated dramatic growth rate of Maker’s Mark is a good problem to have, and we appreciate some of you telling us you’d even put up with occasional shortages. We promise we'll deal with them as best we can, as we work to expand capacity at the distillery.

Your trust, loyalty and passion are what’s most important. We realize we can’t lose sight of that. Thanks for your honesty and for reminding us what makes Maker’s Mark, and its fans, so special.

We’ll set about getting back to bottling the handcrafted bourbon that our father/grandfather, Bill Samuels, Sr. created. Same recipe. Same production process. Same product.

As always, we will continue to let you know first about developments at the distillery. In the meantime please keep telling us what’s on your mind and come down and visit us at the distillery. It means a lot to us.

Sincerely,

Rob Samuels

It's called a hydrometer since gizmo we used to use on batteries and antifreeze but for alcohol. You can get one from Wine making suppliers.

I was in Newport Rhode Island over the weekend. With the wind and snow we needed to take refuge in Pubs along the way. It was a topic of conversation. There was speculation among the professional drinkers, it was a marketing scam. They will create a shortage and the price goes up.
