Picked up a lathe the other day. It was advertised on CL as an Old Laye. It is a south bend catalog # 33-Y built in 1920. Model #760 making it the 60th lathe built in this model. Dont have any pictures before i started cleaning it but you can imagine what it looks like with almost 100 years of grime. Im going to disassemble clean and reassemble it to get it running. Then i might tear it down again to paint it. I was having a hard time getting on the Machine forum so im just going to post here so i can keep track of my progress.

Very nice project ffj. Looks like you have everything there? tooling for holding the cutter? Good job saving that thing from some scrapper.

A shorty like mine..I think mine is 53 or 54ish. Looks like no quick- change, do you have change gears? Think I finally found some for mine. They are made well, but I have a modern 16 incher that I mostly use.

Yes i have the tool post holder and some cutters, a right, left and straight holder. Im not sure what everything is yet. I have never used a lathe. A friend of mine knows a little more then i do about them so i took him with me to look at it. This one is a little old so there are not many parts available but it has power feed and power cross and it also had a full set of change gear that looked brand new. That was the main reason to buy it was because it had the gears. I will eventually sell this one so i can get something to cut metric threads unless i can figure out how to cut metric with the gears i have.

Have you heard of OWWM? Old Wood Working Machines forum is great for shop tools old and new. They have a metal working area, where you might get some answers and advice from people who own the exact machine.

Let me know if you got dupes of any of the gears, I have not got mine yet and may be missing some, or have dupes. I see you got two dogdrivers.look like small faceplates, may need something like that..

Just use a frigging Die. I am sure some geek is going to tell me that doing threads on a lathe is easy. bla bla bla. been there. done that. Use a die.

Using a die is for girls.. Real men are screw-cutters....

I cut three different pitches in a couple hours the other day.. But my lathe is like a Cadillac when it comes time to cut a v groove helically along a bar....
Its usually easier to thread on a lathe, than to play Die-Stock Wrestling..

I want to be able to cut metric for larger things like steering stems or axles that im not going to have a die for.

The nice thing about a good lathe..any size (within its size) and any pitch (within its range) On some i can knock off first one in under 10 minutes, next is quicker..

My biggest problem right now is going to be trying to figure out the rats nest ow wiring they have hooked up to the motor. I need to sort it out and see if i can run this motor forwards and reverse.

Figured out the wiring and bought a switch. Now i just have to buy some 5 wiree and hook it all up so i have forward and reverse. Put it all together today and ran it forward. Works pretty good.

LOL! The first machine shop I ever visited had the overhead drives, but they were powered by an electric motor. There were take-off pulleys located near each machine on the common drive shaft, and when they wanted to use a particular machine, they would fit a flat leather belt onto that pulley. The joint where the leather belt was stitched together would make a slapping sound whenever it contacted the drive or machine pulley. Thanks for bringing that memory to the surface!

Those belts were the main reason to cover your hair in the shop, scary as hell.
