shifter drum detent question
« on: February 17, 2013, 12:26:09 PM »
looks like my shifter detent is stuck in.. am i suppose to feel the neutral position without the forks, shifter mechanisms and etc in place? i think the ball is stuck down, looks like it was sandblasted when it was installed, me being a dummy forgot to pull it out

in other words, is the ball always suppose to be sticking up past the housing? it seems to have a millimeter of free play before it actually hits some spring tension, and when its installed in the case, the shifter drum doesn't feel the detent. i also noticed, on the side of the shifter detent, theres a little hole, is that hole supplied with oil pressure in turn keeping the ball up?

managed to get it freed up.. it felt like the spring inside dropped a little too far for some reason.. ran it under my parts washer for awhile and then kept loading the inside with grease.. finally got the ball to spring back up. still might order a new one because i feel like it doesn't have as much tension to the shifter drum, i could barely feel the detent catch, unless its suppose to be like that

If it makes you feel any better, I've never seen one yet on any bike built by anybody that seemed to want to be fully cooperative or 100% functional. Sort of the nature of the beast to be somewhat balky and contrary from what I've seen. I think that's sort of inherent in the design of any ball detent, it's simply limited in how well it can perform a given function, even the one it was designed for. Maybe it's just me....

thanks for response.. i wasn't sure if it would be a problem in terms of the shifter finding neutral
