Wear your helmet!!! Mine saved my life last night.
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:34:53 AM »
Last night I was riding my Hawk GT around 1:30am.  I was on my way back from going to the store for some milk and Oreos.  I was going uphill about 20-25 mph there was a car in a side street to my right.  The kid pulled out in front of me when I was about 15 feet away from him.  I braked and tried to steer right and pass behind him but there was NO way.  I hit the door and flew through the air, I'm not sure how far or high but I landed on my back, helmet and shoulders first.  I was wearing my helmet, a crash jacket with back, elbow, and shoulder pads.  I also had gloves, jeans and heavy steel toed boots.

My right hand has a 1/2" long laceration on the back. My right knee hurts like a b@@@h, my left hip is about the same.  The cops came and I think the kid was sited but they barely paid attetntion to me other than to check my wounds.  The squad was there but I refused the ride and had my brother take me to the ER.  I was thoroughly checked out, xrayed, cat scanned, blood work etc etc.

If I hadn't had my helmet on it would have meant a terrible or fatal head injury.  Without the jacket I would have gotten road rash and possibly worse injuries.  The gloves saved the palms of my hands from road rash.

Wear your gear, it really will save your life.  I'm a very lucky guy, I'll get another bike out and ride it, and hopefully the other guys insurance will pay for the medical bills and my bike.

God bless all of you.

Full gear here too, it is hard to predict when you are going to be involved in a collision.

The moral of the story is you should not be trying to obtain Oreos and milk at 1:30 in the morning.

Glad you are okay.

Great to hear that "you" have the common sense to take what little time it requires to put on protective gear whether it is 10 miles or 100 miles.

Kudos's to you!  8)

Glad you are with us today.

Glad you had on the gear and are still here with us!  I also appreciate you taking the time to relate your story.  Maybe it will help me or someone else to remember to wear the gear even on a quick trip.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

North Carolina has a helmet law but there is a bill in Raleigh to require helmets only for those under 18.  I am not a control freak but I know this will mean more head injuries.  I have never ridden without a helmet but I might be tempted if the law changes.

Just curious, what does the helmet and other gear look like?

Glad your gear did it's job. Hope the medical bills, bike replacement/repair bills, and all your equipment replacement bills are covered.  Was an expensive snack, glad you managed to survive to share the story.

Believe it or not the jacket is unscuffed. The helmet isn't gouged but there are two round impact marks, one over the left eye where my face would have hit the roof of the car, one in the center at the base of the skull.

The Oreos were all cracked up.  The milk jug didn't burst open.  I had the stuff inside my jacket.

Thats a morsel of "freedom" thrown to the ignorants to keep them feeling "free" whilst the government rape every other perceived freedom you think you may have, yes, they think we are all stupid.... 8)  I'll wear my helmet {maybe with tinfoil on the inside}    ;D

Sounds like that impact would have probably made you a permanent broccoli without a brain bucket.

War helmet.
