Copper exhaust rings v. non-copper rings
« on: March 11, 2013, 11:36:40 AM »
With my exhaust for my 1971 CB500 out getting ceramic coated I'm about to order new rings but noticed the ones at z1enterprises.com are not the stock copper rings. What are the differences between using copper or these others? Is one better than the other?

http://www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?itemDescription=Exhaust+Gasket+CB550+XL600+VF750+GL1500&item=KL16-5976-1

Thanks,
Scott

I don't know about those, but I still have some old white gasket rings, white from asbestos.
I have no intention to use them. You can have them.  :D

So, no one's tried the z1 gaskets? Maybe the silence is my answer and I should just stick with copper.

I've used them, they were easy to install and made a good seal, but I don't have enough miles on them to have info about durability/longevity. It's a fabric-looking green core (couldn't be asbestos I don't think, but looks like it) with a thin metal ring on inside and outside which crushes when installed.

You know asbestos is not curare, it does not kill on touch.  There has to be some extended exposure to do any harm.

Yeah, I'm well aware of the exposure levels for asbestos. I own three apartment buildings that were built before 1930. I don't touch it and it won't kill me. ;)

I have used those rings for many years and they seal very well.  I would recommend them.
While I have no proof, I believe they crush better therefore make a better seal than the copper ones.

I have those new rings on my bike as well.  IIRC they were layers of some blue material and aluminum.  They work fine.  The only reason I got them is because the bike shop was out of the copper type at the time.  Guy at the shop claimed that these newer ones have the benefit of being able to kind-of "fluff" back up after being compressed....so if you take your exhaust on and off a few times, they can still be reused.  Can't attest to that as my pipes have never come back off since then.

ceramic coating. It's an exhaust. I probably should have stated that correctly from the start. [EDIT: corrected original post]

OK good. I've heard good things about it, but never had it done. What price range is it in?

I'm having them media blast my 4-1 exhaust, the 4 flanges and the 8 collar pieces then ceramic coat the exhaust all for about $225. Usually, just ceramic coating costs around $100-150 depending on where you are. I'll post pics once I get it back.

From the description that you guys are talking about of the non copper rings they sound like exhaust packings for older cars. I had a corvair that used exhaust packing, it seals well. I guess its a matter of choice
