Getting Close....Probably only a couple days from crossing fingers and trying to start.  Electrics all done and Carbs Installed.  Mocked up the handlebars and controls and mounted the rear wheel.






Still lots to do, but the pile of parts is getting smaller and smaller.  Going to try and get the forks put back together and get the front wheel mounted tomorrow.

Keep on keepin on!

One frustrating thing is that the list of eventual "to do's" keeps getting longer.  These are things that will be done down the road like replacing some rusty hardware bits, Better Shocks, Rebuilt or aftermarket gauges, etc...  Just isn't needed to get running and isn't in the budget :(  But these are all easy bolt on/off bits, so shouldn't be hard to do as time permits next winter.

Progress.....  Trying to mock up exhaust now. Bit of issue found as exhaust is meant for a '77 model.  Will work out in end, but being a PITA currently  :-\

Getting much closer.  Bike Running much better since syncing the carbs.  Brakes all installed and bled.  Very happy with how the tail light and turn signals turned out.  I tapped the original signal mounts so that the aftermarket signals threaded for a nice clean look.  Still lots to do, but should have it ready for the meet up this Saturday.

Had the first ride tonight....in my fancy shirt and tie attire.  Ignore the high idle.....fixed the mixture screws and resolved after riding around the block a bit.

have only done a quick test, but so far so good.  The riding position is great, but it is definitely a tall bike.  Will post more input after I get a couple miles logged on it. 

Weather is pissing me off though....looks like rain for days.

Not much of an update right now.  Rode the bike quite a bit this year and shook out a number of bugs.  Engine runs great but the handling is being hindered by a squishy front end. 

Also, I had a dumb-ass moment when I realized I didn't shim the front wheel with spacers when I put much thinner rotors on.  Caused a bit of very high speed vibration.  Need to make a couple 2.5mm shims.

To do:
- Progressive Springs up front (or the race tech emulators)
- Shim front wheel
- Figure out exhaust mounting
- Rig up a remote oil filter

I really like the looks and sound of this exhaust, but It's a real PITA getting the 3 pipes installed well.  Almost impossible to get the clamps between the muffler and header to seal.  Very leaky.  Almost considering welding the pipes to the connection and cutting and making new clamp points.

Pipes look really nice Joe. I can sympathize with the PITA pipes, mine are too. Maybe the sound (good) will make up for the hassle.

As a student in 84 I had a XS 750, 74hp.
I loved that 911-sound. But handling was odd.

Yeah...I guess from new they had notoriously soft front suspension.  It's terrible right now event with heavier weight oil.

Hello Folks,

I'm looking for a bit of advise because of my lack of machining and fabrication knowledge.  I'm wanting to do 2 things on this bike that I'd love some input on.

-  I need to make three 2.5mm Spacers for the brake rotors because I put thinner slotted yamaha virago rotors on the front and rear.  What is the best way to go about making spacers for this application?  I realize this is cake for some, but I've never had to do it before.  Is there an off the shelf solution for this or do I simply need to take a rotor to a machine shop and have the spacers made?

- Remote Oil Filter Setup - I love these old hooker pipes, but you have to remove to access the Oil Filter.  Therefore I'm looking to make a remote oil filter setup.  Looking for a solution that wont break the bank.  I've thought about getting one of the XS850/1100 Oil Cooler adapters and having a Block off plate for the end where the filter would normally go.  I'd have to make sure there was still a return path for the oil.  I'd love to hear if anyone has any other ideas.   I know the Oil Filter Housing O-Ring is 117.2mm x 3mm so it's much larger than the SOHC4 Hondas.

thanks for any input.  Looking forward to get this stuff done before weather warms up too much!

Joe - for your spacers, you only need to indicate the outside diameter, the inside diameter, and thickness. Then any machine shop (or you) can produce the spacers. You may be able to find spacers at the hardware store, or use a steel and copper washer together. The hole diameter is probably an M10 or M12 bolt I'm suspecting.

As for the remote oil filter, search the Project threads for Hanibal's build. He did this on a his bike and his work and design was top notch. (It's not copyrighted, so steal away;-)

An idea for your header mounting issue: Chris @MotoGP makes a very trick exhaust that has flanges that seal against the exhaust port, then pass thru a mounting flange. These 2 pieces are installed individually, then the pipe is slipped onto the installed flange, and secured to the flange by high strength springs. Makes removal a snap (maybe a solution for your oil filter) and easier assurance that each pipe seals against the gasket. If you need better pics for an explanation, et me know I may have some close ups to help.

Sorry for silly questions, but for the spacers can I just use a spacer (total of 5 per rotor) at each Rotor Bolt between the rotor and the hub to essentially move the rotor out 2.5mm?  Or is it better to have a one-piece spacer that matches the rotor bolt pattern?

As for the exhaust...the issue isn't really the header pipe removal and install, its the 3 mufflers and their offset mounting.  It's a real pain getting them off and on and positioned correctly. 

I may take the bike to someone to modify the muffler mounting and hangers to make it easier to install.  Maybe then I'll be content removing to change the oil filter.
