Inconsistent neutral light?
« on: April 04, 2013, 09:09:33 AM »
Cb550K 76 - lately my neutral works about 95% of the time but I'm finding that sometimes the bike will be in neutral but there's no light.... Any recommendations?

try cleaning the switch under the left side engine case. Mine would do the same thing, and then once I cleaned the switch, ti worked like a dream.

Neutral switch and also where it fits on the engine.

Do I have to pull it out to clean it?

Yes you'll have to pull it out. There is a little steel ball with a spring behind (like a check valve sorta) it that gets depressed when the bike is in or out of neutral. Probably some junk got in there and it's sticking.

The ball & spring is the neutral locator for the earlier CB500,  the 550's use a different mechanism. Just unplug the single neutral switch wire and cleanup the area. As mentioned that should solve your problem.

If that doesn't work, check the bulb in the indicator itself. I just had to swap out the bulb for my high beam indicator, the filiment had broken and would touch 50% of the time.

Cleaned up the area and it seems like it's working effectively...
