Great bike, cool paint, i need help!
« on: April 07, 2013, 07:44:22 AM »
I have a 1981 CB650c i bought for $200, it has a really great custom paint job. the reason i got it so cheap is the previous owner could not find anyone to fix the issue of it dumbing large volumes of gas on your legs when you ride it.

I had a bike guy i know look into it and he discovered there was a broken arm in the carbs that hold one end of the bar the float is attached to. so long story short i need either a whole new rack or one new carb... but syncing seems like a big process.

I have a set of 1980 carbs (not the CV's that were on my bike) and i am wondering if anyone knows any good resources on how to install the mechanical carbs  in a bike that is meant to  have CV's?

here are the pics, those are hand pinstripes that separate 2 different tones of blue, what does not show well is the medal flake in the paint, its really beautiful in the sun to bad there was none today to show it off!

If anyone knows of a place that can repair those tiny posts that hold the rod that the float pivots on please let me know, I am desperate to have a bike back! I lost my Vulcan in a flood a couple years ago! I have been dodging between a few bikes fixing and selling them because i lost interest. I have fallen in love with this one and really want to get it back on the road!

Do they need to be welded?

inaide the bowl the float is in there are two very small fingers that stick up a hold the metal bar that holds the float. the top of one of them broke through the smallest part and is gone. so i would need some peace of material welded over the top in order to hold the foat.

its not a small amount of gas this thing dumps your legs are pretty wet after any length of ride!

if anyone knows a good source for a rack of these CV carbs or something that can be easily switched out in their please please let me know!

If you have the equipment to braze or a shop that can do it for you that may be a better choice. It's pretty tough to weld cast aluminium.

Thanks for the reply, I think i am going to try to find a way to make the 1980 carbs work or if i can find a good price on another set of 81 cv carbs (i pay over $800 a month in student loans have a child and one on the way so money is very tight) i will probably go that route, when i saw what was broken i assumed it was not possible to fix.

So if anyone knows of any good motorcycle salvage yards in iowa or any other possible resources for these carbs let me know!

Jim F, member here on SOHC/4 offers the carb post repairs.  Don't know the cost, but he could probably rebuild the posts for you.

The PD style carbs will not work. The spacing is different and they won't match up to the ports on the head. You could change the head to a '79-80 and they would work.

Wow. You got that for $200? You Thief!!

Seriously, good steal, man. Wait and see what Jim F. has to say. If you can fix it, that would be the best option.

Very nice 650 for the price you gave for it.  For that price you could probably replace the whole rack and still come out ahead.  Just get ride of that awful king/queen seat.

Does anyone know of an email address or a more direct way to contact him about that welding? I have messaged him and posted in his thread but have not heard anything yet!

The carbs from the 750's are VB carbs could they be interchanged to the 650? i know that the 1982 carbs can be used on the 1981 i am just wondering what else can. I am desperate to get this thing running and really need to know my options!

I found a person near me parting out a 1982 CB650 nighthawk. He said they are CV carbs, does anyone know if this is a direct replacement for my 1981 cb650c carbs? can i mix and match the 2 years?

Thank you all for the assistance, does anyone have any idea if the carbs from a 1982 nighthawk cb650 (they look the same to me) will work in this 1981 cb650c

I Have located a set of CV's in rough but (hopefully) good enough shape to rehab and use. Not sure what i will do with the old ones that have the one broken carb body, maybe stick them on a shelf
