paper exhaust gaskets suck
« on: May 16, 2013, 06:52:05 PM »
i went to put my pipes on today so i could try and see if she would start up for the first time ever and the gasket would not go in well so i started to gracefully tap it in and it def came apart. I guess I will order some copper kind tonight. CB350f by the way. Anyone have any better luck with these type of gaskets. They are like a metal with paper within them

more commonly called exhaust packings. They work well enough in the right applications. It is more of a donut like style but smaller, Corvairs used them too

Usually good for one use. After heat cycling they really can't be reused they usually go to crap. Fel-pro is the hot ticket for them

i dont really follow you. These were brand new and i went to install the first one and it was too tight to fit and i tried to tap it in and it came apart. I ordered some new ones off ebay tonight. they look different than the 3 remainders that i have

Without a pic of what you are talking about I'm assuming you are having trouble with "exhaust packings"

They aren't very durable as they are material just kinda squished together. Most people try to reuse them with bad luck, others have them fail immediately

Are you sure the old crush gaskets were out of the ports?  They flatten and expand to form to the port and often appear to be part of the port after getting a good coating of exhaust soot.  If they are still in place they will screw up just about any other gasket you use on top of them.  Use a hooked pick or spring puller to get behind the edge and they will usually pop out.

yeah i made sure they were all out. the diameter of the new gaskets were too large, it was this that was causing them not to go in. I found that other people have suffered this same problem.

I wonder if they have different OD? I have a 750 I don't know if other SOHCs have the same size exhaust ports. I thought they were all the same but not sure now. Try cross referencing the part #s for different size motors on a Honda site.

Just use the copper crush gaskets. Thats the way Honda intended.
