Hey people,

I was wondering what the best DIY method is to resurface brake discs? i have done quite a bit of machining in my time, but for some reason i dont think slapping it in the lathe and turning it down is going to work too well? i mean its stainless... I am no expert, so any advice and/or tips are welcome.

Are they warped ? That would be the only time that I'd turn them. I usually just hit them with some 60 grit on my sander followed by some brake cleaner. No need for much more.

isnt 6mm the minimum?

I guess you would have to space the pads out?

I spin the disc in the lathe, and sand with a rubber block and emery cloth. I tried to turn one once, and it didn't work; too much tool chatter. To thin the discs they must be ground.

I got as far as trying to fit it in the lathe - lathe too small:)

I have mine blanchard ground. They look like new and even drilled discs can be surfaced this way.

I scrabbed mine down with scotch bright and xylol just to make sure there is no brake fluid residue. I believe it made a difference and it was fairly easy.

I sanded mine with some 80 grit, I also had a fume hood to take all of the very nasty dust(possibly asepsis). Drilled, then used a paint stripper drum, chucked in a drill press at its highest speed. Check out my project if that helps. Also iron and air mag, gave a walk through of how to drill and re surface disks.

Auto Zone purchase, paint stripper.

I had Godffrey's do my CB500's disk. It came out just about perfect:

I wonder if he grinds it or turns it? Co bit was good enough for drilling, carbide should cut it IMHO.

I'm pretty sure the stainless needs to be ground and at a slower rate so it doesn't get much heat put in to it. IIRC turning is a no go with them unless you want to just work harden the surface

Truedisk and Godfrey's stuff is top notch, no doubt.

Just wanted to throw this out there though. If you don't want to ship it anywhere, just find a local auto parts store that does machine work and ask 'em if they grind flywheels. If they can to that they most likely have resurfaced rotors before.

Had mine done at my local shop in NJ and they turned out pretty well. About $30 a rotor, but being near NYC raises prices on everything.

Pic attached of a dual disc setup I just finished for someone. (BONUS QUESTION - What's that towards the top between the rotors?? I have a few more for sale!).

Nope, it was made for that setup! It's a dual disk speedo adapter. Bought one from a member to upgrade my brakes. Guy flew the coop. On a another forum someone wanted dual disks, so I refurbished some calipers for him, drilled, resurfaced and pc'ed his rotors. Had another adapter made for him. While I was at it figured it would be best to have a few (6) made...will post them up for sale eventually.

Is Rangelov the guy selling 'em? I bought them from him years ago. Tried to get another and the bolts with no response. Checked his account and it was not active for a while. Others where looking for him also. Is he back? If he's selling 'em here obviously I won't.

I also check the for sale section often and haven't seen him post any for sale lately, but it's possible I missed it.

I just checked and the original thread he had them for sale in and it's gone. I think that's where the others expressed interest.

Believe me I would have rather just bought another than go through the process of having some made!
