Author Topic: Front Turn Signal Stalks (Read 6467 times)

I just got new turn signals and front stalks from partsnmore. The bike is a 750 k3. The first pic is the new stalk compared to the stalks from my other bike (k4). The second pic is the new stalk compared to the current stalk on the k3. You can see that the new ones match the k4, but are much shorter than the ones on the k3. So my question is are the current k3 stalks on the bike in the second pic the wrong ones? They are rusted and pitted and i want to replace them with the correct parts for the stock bike. Thanks for any help.

They come in different lengths. Looks like you bought a pair that are too short.
The replacement parts (aftermarket I have seen) also don't have the taper of the stock ones. The metal on the stock ones gets much thinner toward the ends in the stock ones whereas the aftermarket ones tends to be thicker walled. At least for the pair I had bought.
Rear ones have the different base on my 550...

ok thanks guys. just so i'm clear (the pic is hard to see) the stalks that are on the bike in the second pic are the correct k3 stalks? the new one that i'm holding in that pic are not right? i know they will work. i'm just trying to make it correct. does anybody reproduce these? i can clean mine up, but they have deep pits in them. i can face the pits downward to hide them a bit. i've looked on ebay and most look worse than mine. thanks again.

your short stalks are correct for the US. Use them.

got it! that's what i was hoping for. any idea what the long stems that are currently on the bike are from? the only evidence of this bike ever going down is some rash on the front bottom of the #4 pipe just behind the bend. but they are not the original pipes from this bike. the fork ears don't have the slightest ripple to indicate that the original stalks were damaged in a crash. the turn signal housings look original. i know it's 40 years old and there's no telling what happened in that time. just curious. maybe the longer stalks were to clear a fairing or windscreen at some time? thanks for the help!

I think yours are original,the long tapered ones. I have a couple of original 73's 750's down at the shop and will take a peek later today. In some pics I have they look like the longer but no close ups and I can't remember. Will take my camera down to verify.

Longer stalks give more separation for the turn signals which can help with nighttime visibility as the headlight corona doesn't wash out the signal lamp...

Isn't there a law there is always a law

Some certain distance center to center from headlight center. I think this is why they were changed?

The CB750 K3, K4, K5 and K6 all use the long tapered or stepped front turn signal stalk design. Honda part number: 90154-341-670. The long stalk in your photo below is factory correct. Click/double click on parts diagrams for largest view.

well damn! i looked around and all the usual suspects sell the partsnmore ones associated with that part number. bikebandit even shows it in the fiche as the short one like my new partsnmore one. i still got a while till i get to them. i'm working on the rear of the bike now. i'll probably just clean them up the best i can and use the long stockers. everything on the bike is original or looks like original parts. it would be just my luck that someone would say, "Nice bike. Those are the wrong front turn signal stalks."

i agree it would probably look better with the shorter stalks and i may use the short ones. i'm toying with turning them into just blinkers, no running lights also. i know i'm more visible with the running lights. they just bother me for some reason. it think it's because the rears are not running lights also. too asymmetric for me. i'd rather lose the front running lights than convert the rears. i just got the partsnmore turn signal assemblies for all four corners, so i'm gonna have to play with all that anyway.

Well Carl looked at some of my bikes today to see whats up on those original signal stalks. If you want stock for a 73 or a 74 for that matter it looks looks they had the longer shaft with the step down in the middle. Here are three pics,not the best but the first being from a 73 Bacchus Green , 2nd from a 73 Orange and the 3rd from a Boss Maroon 74.Will say those 2 years had the same stem from the factory.We all know 75 and 76 K bikes were the fat boys.Think 69-72 were the skinny short boys with the 69-71 coming out from the headlight bucket mount and 72 being a little different first year out of the ear.

thanks ekpent. i appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to help me out with this. hopefully i can find a nice set before i get the rear of the bike together and start working on the front. if i can't find them, it won't be the only part of the bike that's not perfect so i guess it's not that big a deal.

I need two short stalks for a project. If you are not going to use them I will pay you whatever they costed you from parts'n'more as long as you can send them to Spain in any usps product around $10. I can buy from partsnmore but they want $60 for sending the two stalks! You know, automated shipping calculators...

The correct 750 K3 long stalks (90154-341-670) are no longer available from Honda.

The short front stalks (90154-268-670) were originally used on the 750 K0, K1 and K2.

A good used pair of the correct long stalks may be an option for you. Try posting in the forum “parts wanted” section. The correct stalks you need were also used on the 750 K3 to K6 bikes.

No big deal, I was going to order them from a german website but thought the time was right in case you didn't want them. Unfortunately, the USPS -and the spanish Post- have jacked up their prices sooo much that buying or selling from/to US has become so expensive it is not worth it anymore. When I think that 80% of my CB350 is formed with parts bought from US sellers a few years ago...

Would there be enough interest to have them made again? Is it a part that can be rechromed easily? Volvo used a easy to cast pot metal on their rear trunk handle on many of their cars in the 60s (owned a 66 122S for 12-15 years) and other parts that didn't see tons of heavy loads. The chrome was high quality but, it couldn't be rechromed as it would melt in the plating tanks.

Can the front Signal stems be rechromed?

Yes, I've had them done.

Turns out Carl and I are in opposite boats, my K2 came with long stems that I got replated, only to realize they aren't correct and I need the short ones.

This is true, but K5-K6 U.S.A. market bikes had different (bigger) signals and stems, so they were the exception. Federal mandate thing was reason for bigger, more visible lights (according to the powers that be at the time)

If I recall correctly for '74-76 cb550 doesn't use a stepped stem, it is a constant taper after the knurled part until it reaches the knurled part at the other end. So, I like the idea of the correct length as I want my signsls to be old school cool not cafemodern. Heck, They may have a Ulra bright low watt LED bulb in them that is brighter than the sstock unit but less current but, they are gonna look period correct.
Also, '77-78 (or whenever the big lights hit the cb550) might have been '76? the fork ears were changed to a gaiter-less fork design (77-78 I believe) and the mondo big indicator/turn lamps become standard. The big indicator lamps didn't have a separate stalk, it was built-into the fork ears on the CB550 and the indicator lamps were mounted lower out of any possible flare from the motorcycle's headlamp by the position moving down the fork ears 4-5 inches. Granted Halogen lights had not gained widespread use yet, so it is interesting to see that change for safety. (It is my supposition that is why they were moved.)

I guess I am not a real purist but when I can I enjoy keep the classic period correct look. As long as it isn't a fortune. You will Not find me owning a sandcast, simply couldn't afford entry price much less than the cost of the parts. I think cars of bikes are to be used. there are some exceptions for those significant historical examples but, not all K0s or all K8? (was there a K9?) would be as first and last of the line be needed to be treated like a museum piece.

That is what I am talking about! Looks great and no rust worries either. Maybe you can whip up some reproduction signals in SS or aluminium while you are at it.
