Well the top end is done. Carbs syncd. Took her for her first ride since fixing the leaky head gasket in the freezing rain. I couldn't open her up but her is the video. I'm running a tad rich I think.

Nice. Runs good, sounds good, looks good.... it's all good.  :)  I don't worry about loud exhaust. My loud exhaust is payback for the neighbor's yappy dog.  ;D

The fun never seems to end! I pulled the spark plugs to look at them and they looked nice. I get to number one as I went from 4-1... It looked nice so I thought maybe I would check the last 2 head bolts. Looking into the cylinder I see what looks to be a part of a ring. HUH!!!! A couple of swears and I had to "fish" out the ring looking thing!

I poke at it with a screw driver and this thing wont move! Only rationalization is it may be the head gasket metal ring that sits around the cylinder. This might contribute to the small amount of oil seepage from the left side.

I will be pulling the motor soon and rebuilding it from the bottom up. Hopefully this did not create any more damage to the head or cylinders...

Here is a better pic.

Is that piece movable? I looks like the seat area of a valve face in the picture.

Are you suggesting that a valve could be open, if so makes sense to me.

Lol! I didn't poke the bear! But damn do I feel like an idiot! I pulled the head and everything looks good! Did mention I feel like an idiot. The big bore gasket looks brand new. The base gasket needs to be replaced though. Here is a few pics. I did scratch the bottom of the head. It isn't rough but I can see it. Do I need to repair it?

I guess I needed to do this anyways to put in the cylinder o rings so it's not a big deal. Now I will order a base gasket. Also since the head gasket looks new do I need to replace? I mean there is maybe 30 miles tops with the head gasket?

OK, now that we got you to take it back apart....  ;D

Maybe get that scratch resurfaced? It might be worth the 'not tearing it down again' part, if the new head gasket leaks there. It can slowly burn a groove through the area if it doesn't seal it. I seriously doubt the used head gasket would seal that, but if resurfaced, it might.

Maybe add some quench band? This will increase the valve flow a bunch with those big bores by helping to deshroud the valves.

That's a 650 base gasket. Use a stock gasket or Cometic offers Viton coated steel in stock thickness (several different thicknesses)

Thanks Brent . I posted cause I wasn't sure if the 650 and 550 use the same base gasket as stated on the listing.

Got the cylinders off. Cleaned the cylinders and the outside. First installation I forgot to install the cylinder o rings. Are they suppose to fit inside the wall and block? If yes there is no way with these.

Without looking back through your thread did you bore the cylinders to install different sleeves or are they stock? If the cylinder was bored the width of the o-ring groove will obviously be reduced. They need persuasion to install. Very lightly grease them and I use the flat part of a fine screwdriver to install. Take your time to get them in evenly without stretching. This wouldn't have led to your oil leak by the way.

I'd use the 550 base gasket too.

Cylinders are stock. I thought they are finicky but they won't even sit in the groove.

Slight change of plan. Since I did this engine I'm going to put the original engine back in but use the new head and cylinders. So rather then buying another project I will continue on this.

Got the cylinders off. Cleaned the cylinders and the outside. First installation I forgot to install the cylinder o rings. Are they suppose to fit inside the wall and block? If yes there is no way with these.

This particular "fit" is tighter than any other O-rings in the 550 engine, that's for sure. It is a 40% compression of the thickness. I usually press them in at 4 places first, like at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, then in between those spots, and finally slide around on them with the flat side of the screwdriver. Otherwise they extrude and stretch out, and you end up with an extra 1 cm of length that won't go anywhere! At least you have the softer silicone O-rings, which are the easier ones to install.

Without these O-rings, a slow weep of oil works its way up the bores over time. This becomes a slow but constant weep at the head gasket joint unless you have a genuine Honda sealant-impregnated head gasket that melts itself shut over time. On 750 engines that are old enough that these cracked and broke, they exhibit this trait consistently. ;)

Tews,
You may want to consider buying a set of plastic trim tools from HF for removing the head in the future to prevent nicks and scratches of the head. They can be driven between the surface of the cylinder and head without marring the aluminum and are an inexpensive sacrifice to save you the expense of machine work.
Screw drivers to separate mating surfaces of heads and cylinder and the like are a no no as you have learned.
Don't mean to kick you when you are down. I've learned the hard way too when dealing with aluminum heads on cars the first time...

Well it's been a very long winter... LONG!!! I haven't really been working on the build this winter as i was occupied with my kids wrestling and lots of traveling. Anyways I am back at it. Little progress today as I removed the engine and dropped it off at my friends house to rebuild it.
I did get for the most part new OEM o rings and gaskets.

One question I do have is that when the engine was assembled and I rode it it had a hard time shifting gears I mean impossible after a 30 minute ride. I will be checking out the dogs to see if any abnormal wear is present.

1-However should I get new clutch plates?
2- Could it be the chromed clutch cover case that is effecting the shifting?

If the shifting problem is all gears, most likely the problem is clutch related.  Specific gears would be trans. And............oil type and viscosity does affect shifting.  I did not touch one of my bikes this past winter either...Larry

Note the battery-powered tool...............Two garage buildings have burned/exploded a few miles from me over this past winter (will it ever end?) caused by spilled fuel and/or fumes that were ignited by the electrical discharge of a battery-powered shop tool.  If your tool shows a flash when you release the trigger...........be warned.

Tews............your getting some great advice............
