Tews' 605 build, On the road! 5/4!

Well it's time again for a cough cough, cafe build. I really do not like using the word cafe as it has become cliche' but it's what I am going for with this build.

My first build had big aspirations but with a limited budget, impatience on my part and lack of know how the build ended up beign a really well running bike but really lacked my vision......

This time I have just that, time. No rush as I have a daily rider with my K1. I picked up this beauty from Illinois recently. She has 8540 miles on her. A true one owner bike as I have a copy of the original title... Bike was bought March of 1977.... Tank is mint but the side covers were painted over and cracked up. I bought a nice NOS set and planned to keep her stock....

Well, plans changed when I started to notice the little things. Well, the no damn power... Hacked to hell wire harness...... THe huge gouges on the frame's paint. PO's kid or grand kid was trying to access under the seat but was unable to due to the missing key.....

The frame is pretty crusty and will need to be powder coated.... Rather to go into detail of my build I will just give updates. As stated first build was planned out but didn't end up the way I intended.....


First question I have is in relation to the carbs. These are so crusty Everything is stuck.... I soaked in boiling water and simple solution.... Let soak for 2 days and they still look like this..... Nothing will budge...... Do I just dip the entire rack into GUNK carb cleaner?

Here are pics of the carbs and how she sits now. The carbs are so guey even after soaking that the main jets will not budge. I do not want to break anything off.... Each bowl was more then half full of old gas turned into molasses type substance.

Any advice on what I should do?

That's what mine looked like on my previous 550. I have a can of Berryman's carb cleaner that I soaked mine in. 30-45 minutes then a brass wire brush.

The varnish is going to need a solvent to cut it, carb cleaner or use a can of Chem-dip at auto parts store. Strip the rubber parts and dissassemble for a soak. Don't leave in too long.
You can use heat from a torch to help disassemble if fuel and solvents are flushed away for stuck bolts/screws.

The heat gun worked for me, too.  The carb slides were glued in,  and the heat helped alot. In my case, I did not rush the job.  Took about an hour for each carb.  They cleaned up and work quite well now.  As we all know patience is need on these bikes.  They are worth it!

Is it safe to soak the entire rack as is in GUNK carb  cleaner? I will replace all gaskets. I do not want the brass to melt or freeze to the carb body. Nor do I want the floats to go bad

Nick...my K3 was bad too. I did what so many are afraid to do...I deracked the carbs and soaked them 24 hours in Gunk cleaner. Move them around every so often to be sure you get the bubbles out and the cleaner into the holes and crannys. I am sure you know not to force those float pins out, but just feel better mentioning it. If you have issues getting the slides moving you could even try some PB Blaster in that area once the you are done with the dip. Check out the before and after pics. Good luck with your new project.

Thanks Johnie. I got GUNK because I saw your post previously. I will remove each carb and soak as a whole...

I was thinking my build title was cool but now kinda cheesy. Oh well. Slow progress to follow.

Dark knight cafe build? Ok, im in. Seems ultrasonic cleaning is the best way to clean carbs but obviously you dont have one.  Wish I did.

I know I know. Not sure what the proper title should be yet.... I like the R1 paint scheme of flat black and little bling. Reminded me of dark knight.

I still have one carb body soaking for over 12 hours. Float and main jet still won't budge.

Hairdryer on high heat , shoot in some Pb blaster and let them both do the work. Works for me. leave the hairdryer on it as long as you can, it won't burn the parts, but don't leave it alone and grab a beer and a game, it could burn the garage.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

I have Pb blaster and will try the hair dryer trick tomorrow. Carb bodies 1 and 2 are stripped and in the cleaning process. 3 and 4 still soaking

Good on you...the main thing is don't rush the process...let the chemicals do the work. I do like the heat idea too.

PB blaster worked for one.... 3 down and still the first carb body still soaking. She is staying strong in regard to not giving up the damn float pin...

May have a really cool goodie in the mail this week for the bike. Waiting on confirmation of the deal.

Nick............Nice work so far.............I use the sonic cleaner now but have used the 'dip' in the past. +1 on the heat for the slides.  I use a slightly smaller diameter and longer pin to tap the float-pins out.

Do you have a theme for the build...........front fender to rear.........make a list of parts you may need.

I know you know Nick, but be careful with those float pins man. I had the same issue with the K3...again took my time and let the chems and heat do their work. If you rush the process you will be sorry...a good restore is a slow restore.

A soda blaster would make quick and really nice work of those carbs. No chemicals, water clean up. I did it to mine and am completly sold. Will never do it any other way.  Brasses, aluminum, bodies, and all.

An 06 GSXR complete front end.  I texted the guy back to give him my price and he said he has a guy coming in person. He didn't want to deal with shipping and paypal. Now back to searching.
