Post some pictures of your Bike Bill. I think it's as cool, if not cooler than any CB750. We all deserve to see it here.

Fenders - not sure if the guys know, but you have a K8 right?

I'm thinking this is making you bias. I also have a K8 and like it very much. The later 750's are not as quick as the early ones.
Bet you would like a K1 if you had one and possibly would not be having this conversation.

And as far as vibration, have you taken your 450 on a 200 mile ride? This would give you a better idea...

The CL 450  posted some low 0-60mph times in I think Cycle World.. I dont doubt it .
This discussion was about 0-60 between the 450 and the 750.

This. People started to talk around the point about vibration, what bike is "faster", and build quality (however wrong they are :)), which is not what I'm asking for/discussing about. Though, it has been an interesting discussion, none-the-less.

I'm very happy with my K8 performance, especially after I got it back to 100% stock form (plus a K&N filter). Had it up to 100MPH on my trip for a few seconds, and it had plenty to spare (that's talking about "speed" though). I never heard that the later Cb750s are slower; I don't understand "why" if that's the case. I think the specs are still close to identical. Actually, I may have heard that the later CB750s are faster, but I could have heard wrong.

The CB450 and the CB750 are different bikes entirely, and I understand that there isn't a "BETTER" one. The CB450 feels QUICK. I manuever it, the bike doesn't manuever me. I feel a bit limitless on it, which probably can be a bad thing.  :P I feel that it's not going to tip or fall over with me around because I have 100% control on it.

The CB750 feels "fast" and "ballsy" and has plenty of "punch" but it also feels heavier, sluggish, and doesn't feel as "quick" or agile. It "feels" like a "motorcycle", and not a light-weight demon like the CB450 feels like.

I honestly felt that my CB450 felt like a bat that was flying straight out of hell by the seat of the pants feel. It was an awesome feeling. I love the "muscle punch" "cruiser" feeling of the CB750, but I really miss that light-weight, do-anything feeling of the CB450.

I wouldn't take my CB450 over my CB750 for going on longer trips, but that doesn't mean the CB450 couldn't do it with ease. That doesn't also mean that the CB750 is free of vibration (as Bill was saying) as I had to take a break from some handlebar vibration on the CB750 (though it just happened once).

I'm talking about 0-60 and 1/8 here. We never really answered this (we keep talking around the point). There's a consensus that the CB750 eats the CB450 in all performance metrics. The responders seem sure of this, some who have even had a CB450. But I'm not thoroughly convinced until I see some stronger data.

If someone had a performance sheet of the CB750 like I posted for the CB450, then that would answer it. I tried my best to do some research. I was only able to find the Youtube video of a '78 CB750 doing the 1/8 mile at a little over 10 seconds (recorded twice), which is slower than what Honda lists for the CB450. This doesn't answer the question, but it's the best I could find.

Remember, over 100 lbs less, and 100hp per liter. The CB450 is very impressive on paper.  I was expecting a slow bike when I bought it, but I was very very impressed. I called my dad and said "This is not a toy".

Oh man, Modern bikes are just absolutely unreal. I was on my friend's 2000s Honda VFR 800.

Those bikes are insanely quick and they stop insanely quick. There's just no comparison.

But those bikes are not nearly the amount of fun as the vintage stuff. :)

I also don't think they look nearly as good, either.

Where at in Idaho are you? I'm in Boise....

When I finish my CB450, there's probably a good chance I will be riding it more than the CB750. I just prefer the feel. But on road trips (and riding two up), the CB750 is cool!

And my CB750 is a really cool looking bike. It's the best 78 CB750 that I've seen. :)

If I were a betting man......

You are under 5'11"

My 400 and 500 have the nimbleness you describe without the vibration other have described.

My 450 twin vibrates. Not any more so than other twins of the era.

If you are stepping off a sohc4 or a modern bike....you'll think you've climbed on an out of balance washer.

The 1/4 mile for the CB750 is readily available. 13 seconds seems to be the strong average. Mid 12's is going to require some modifications. Anyhow, the CB450 is a little over a second slower in the quarter, which I already guessed.

However, I'm interested in the shorter distances, such as the 0-60 and the 1/8 mile, which isn't easy to find online for the CB750. Here's all the info for the CB450:

http://www.cb450stuff.com/specs/index.htm

The CL SCREAMS for lower end, probably because of the high gearing. The CB is still impressive.

Here's a source for the CB750 saying the 0-60 is 6.5 seconds:

http://www.hondacbworld.com/index.php/cb-750-main

The CB450 does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds.

Have I started to convince yet?

I knew all of this just by owning, riding, and comparing both bikes at the same time. Even with the tiny little rear sprocket (highway) that my CB450 had, it was QUICK (and at 125 PSI compression). The CB450 I would classify as a ROCKET. The CB750 I would classify as a heavier muscle car that has punch (but not off the line).

After I rode my 450 for the first time, my first thought was, "you can get hurt by this". It's lightweight, and it's quick. Quicker than I would have guessed.

Here is a period test

http://yeoldecycleshoppe.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/1969-honda-cb750-road-test/#jp-carousel-1992

CB750 1969

0-60 5.2 sec over half a second faster then your quoted 450 figure.

Are we done with the cb450 is faster?

Cycle world test

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sohc4-articles/CB750K/69CW-CB750-Road-Test.pdf

Here is the link to the cycle world 1968 test on the cb450

http://www.hondatwins.net/forum/download/file.php?id=11939&mode=view

Just to be objective this is the 1968 cb450 twin vs the 1969 cb750

As close as I could get to apples to apples

Cb750 1/8 mile 7.9 sec cb450 8.73.

0-30 times cb750 2.9 sec cb450 1.6

0-60 times cb750 5.2 sec cb450 5.8

1/4 times cb750 13.38 sec cb450 14.43

So, slight edge to the 450 at the launch. Number of factors at play on the 0-30 times.

Gearing. 1st on the 450 is 18.51 vs 13.99 on the 750

Makes a difference to the first shift 100-150 ft.

Bigger sprocket on the back would aid the 750  since its not terminal on speed or rpm at the end of the 1/4.

Type of launch. Smaller is easier to launch

Less power is easier to launch. It's easier to not spin the period narrow tires or wheelie the bike with less power.

Point being.....you'll be within a bike length to 30 mph ( maybe 150 - 200 ft) then the bigger bike will be gone.

Half a second faster to the 1/8 half way point and 60 mph.

Full second and 10 mph (100 vs 90 mph) at the end.

We done?

Thx for digging that up.

They are both close. The CL450 will get to 60 MPH faster than the CB750, which is interesting. Gearing is probably the reason.

To conclude:

CB750 will get to 60 MPH a half second faster.

CB750 will get to the 1/8 mile mark about .8 seconds faster.

This wraps it up. But I still think the CB450 is 'mo fun. :)

As in the royal "we"? Never said the CB450 is the greatest, but I'm surprised that many Honda fans here are disrespecting it, such as yourself.

I personally, will always have a nice twin in the garage. I can't imagine having a garage of ONLY Honda 4s. You need that variety from Honda to spice up the riding experience.

Anytime you want to race that CB550 against the CB450.....:)

Why limit yourself to just twins and Fours.    Get a couple V4's and thumpers too.
The V4's have a sound all their own that is just awesome, especially the ones with gear-driven cams.    I've got a 400cc V4 (VFR) that's quicker than any SOHC4 750  ;)
(and I won't even bring up the 750 V4  ::)  ).

Not dissing the 750, just saying it isn't always about speed.    If you like your twin great!   I have 160cc twins I like.    I also enjoy my 400cc VFR as much, if not more than the 750cc VFR, though the 750 is more comfortable for longer rides.    Each bike has a purpose.   I'm just happy to be fortunate to have more than one.   ;D

I'll take my CB400F over a CB750 any day of the week.   That doesn't make it better, it just makes it my preference.
It is one of the slowest bikes that I own, but I still enjoy it for what it is.

I'm actually fine with you guys not liking CB450s. :)

Because that's more that I get to have. I've been buying every one I've seen so far.

I find it impressive that it's nothing short of a race motor that was being developed in the 50s.

The perfect "feel" for me. I really miss when mine was up and going...but I just had to tear it apart.

My personal opinion is that the CB400 is one of the ugliest bikes I have ever seen in my life. Same for the CB500.

The CB450 is the only large Honda twin that I can "fit" on. I can't even fit that well on my dad's 79 CB750. Those (sorry to say) stupid tear-drop tank designs and low cut seats make the bikes uncomfortable for me. That's why the new CB750 is a failure in my eyes, and the fact that they should have based it on the SOHC CB750s, which is where the true classic is.

The new Triumph Bonnevilles catch my eye. Sexy, classic, retro-bikes done well. Honda should really take note.

If Honda re-releases the CB450, that would be completely awesome. That will probably give me a reason to buy a modern bike.
