Starter motor question
« on: June 20, 2013, 04:49:03 PM »
1973 Cb 750

Starter motor fires up but does not engage.

What should my friend expect to see and then repair when he starts to turn a wrench?

Thanks

possibly starter clutch.  take the alternator cover off and have a look, try and lean the bike to the right when you do as oil will come out.  IDK if you have a book available or not but use the custom search on this forum for starter clutch and I am sure a lot will turn up, many threads started over this including one from me.

If the starter motor sounds like it is just spinning freely, the alternator rotor may be spinning on the crankshaft due to a loose bolt; this happened to me shortly after I bought my bike. Like nccb said, pull off the alternator cover, as all of the starter gear-train is under it. The shifter cover will need to be removed first.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
