Alternative oil pressure sensor replacement.
« on: June 17, 2013, 08:15:00 PM »
Howdy

So my 550 is going through some oil pressure issues so i'd like to replace my current sensor so I can rule it out.  Though the Honda part seems a liiiittle pricey.  Any recommendations for a more affordable alternative?

Things I have consider are; the psi at which the switch engages, thread size, and overall size of the unit so it fits within the cover.. correct? (id prefer not having to modify one.)

Does this unit fit the criteria?

thanks in advance

PSI will be fine, I'm pretty sure the Honda's use an 1/8 NPT thread, only thing I can't guarantee is it will fit behind the cover.  The original one is fairly large though, so shouldn't be too much of an issue.

thanks for the heads up.  the listing says its 1/8 in. x 28 NPT,  is that "28" figure something I should consider first?

that would be number of thread per inch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_pipe_thread

thread size and pitch have to match.

Cool, i have a die cutting set with tools to measure the threads.  That could have been a very costly mistake, trying to fit the wrong two sizes together.  thanks

Have you considered a remote gauge? I like one mounted between the clocks right in your face with a light for the night.green looks good at night. IMO.

Got pics and a link? Either or, preferably both. :)

I found an oil sender unit for a 1980s Civic from NAPA that was cheaper and fit just fine.
My problem was it worked fine but was leaking too much oil.

Speak of the devil, I was just in Pepboys last night looking at parts to rig one.  I've done a few thread searches on them and saw some neat examples, some up top some by your feet.  Definitely something i'll be installing soon.

If you just want a gauge you could try something like one of these:

http://www.cyclexchange.net/Oil%20System%20Comp%20Page.htm (about half way down the page)

They are meant to replace the oil gallery plug but are for a 750.

You could do something similar on a 550 I'm sure. Drill and tap one of the oil gallery plugs for a pressure gauge.

It wasn't leaking from the threads, it was wore out and ready for replacement.

Now that I think about it...Could I just install it where the oil pressure sensor is?  Then drill a hole through the left cover and rig the gauge externally

Sounds feasible. So long as you can get a gauge with the same thread, drill and retap for the size you need, or rig up some type of adapter. You'll also need some flexible tubing but I think probably comes with any mechanical pressure gauge you would buy for automotive uses.

Anyone remember the dash mount (circa 1973-74) “SuperByke” kit with the backlight gauge?

I dig Terrys setup, very clean looking and might be the right choice, but Im a little apprehensive about its location and the possibility of it breaking off.
also..Is there much worry about shavings getting inside the case when drilling and tapping into that gallery plug?

I was actually looking at this thread last night, then I could keep the oil pressure sensor and have a gauge as well, seemed neat.  Though it wont fit with how the 550's oilpump is setup...unless I cut some holes in the chain cover and have the adapter outside. But that means the sensor would have to be outside...exposed to the elements and well, looking ugly. haha

Ill think about the adapter... but for now, heres some pics i took from the internet and with my amazing Michelangelo painting skills, presents what I had in mind..
Id cut the chain cover two spots and feed a hose up through the top

Just a side note: The oil sender threads are 1/8" BSPT not 1/8" NPT. There is a different number of threads per inch and the pitches between the two are slightly different as well. You can cross thread 1/8" NPT in there and it probably won't leak, but it's not right.
