Questions about Vesrah engine gasket kit
« on: June 26, 2013, 06:15:12 AM »
So dumb me pulled out an exhaust stud from the cylinder head   >:(  I read on here the best way to fix it is to have the hole welded, then retapped.  My motor leaks a little oil from the valve cover, and the head, and the oil pump, and the oil pan, and I'm sure you see where this is going.  I want to knock all of this out of the way.  I wasn't planning on a full disassemble just yet since my bike doesn't smoke at all.  I haven't run a compression test yet, though, so if that fails, then I'll be rebuilding.  I've been entertaining the idea of going 592 down the road, so if the compression test is good, I'm going to leave them alone for now.

Assuming I don't have to rebuild, I won't be going any further down than head removal.  The Vesrah kit looks like a nice price, but I've read on here it's missing some things, but I haven't read what is missing.  I read it doesn't have the "hockey pucks."  What are these and how many do I need to replace them?  Are they the "Cylinder Head Nut Cover" that PartsNMore lists?  Is so, are they even needed?  When I did the engine on my 600, the cylinder head nuts weren't covered and were left exposed to the oil.

Does the Vesrah kit include the seals for the shift shaft and output shaft?

My oil pump is leaking too.  Does the Vesrah kit include the o-rings to rebuild it?

Does Post 23 of "the thoughts of hondaman" apply to my bike?  It's about the rocker shafts.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=7401.0

Thanks again.  I've been without my bike while I figure out the what/how of fixing it.

1978 have the opgradet rocker arm..so no vorryes on that
autput shaft can only be thanged vith split of engine..there are dots on the sealings(i think)..they are normaly not leaking there..
most oil pressure units leaks..so vask it in fuel and test drive..for leaks..before more done...... gear shift sealing are often leaking..easy to thange
oil pump o ring..are not incl in a head gasket set

I wasn't really worried about the output shaft, but because I seem to fix one thing, and 2 more break, I wanted the security net...lol.

And that's a really clean sprocket area.  I don't think my bike is capable of getting that clean...lol.

Thanks for the info.

The Vesrah kit does not include the pucks; you do need them because the cylinder head nuts are not really internal.  If you look in your cooling fins, you can see them.  As for the leaks in the bottom end, just tell people you made a chain boiler for it....

my opinion...use honda seals and gaskets. i bought the athena gasket kit (which included some vesrah stuff) and it leaked out of every seal and o-ring after 5000 miles. when i took all the seals and o-rings out after another rebuild, the athena pieces were hard as rock (including the pucks). just for fun i took apart my parts bike motor, and the original honda seals were still nice and squishy.

fresh pucks will save you many pairs of pants.

How many pucks do I need?

And the oil pump leaks a lot.  It's grounded to the garage until I get that fixed.  I have noticed I smell like motorcycle after a ride.  Not that I mind the smell, but I'm sure others do.
