Doubling-up oil seals on forks?
« on: June 25, 2013, 03:10:18 PM »
Hey fellas,

I know that one should use a double what what oil seal on the forks as it not merely an oil seal keeping oil in, its also exposed to linear movements.

I cannot for the life of me source the correct seals locally (in SA). Could i not perhaps use 2 x 5mm thickness ones therefor getting the double what what that is required for such an application?

Is it something i could consider?

Many thanks ;)

Some bikes came with double seals and then were changed to a single wide seal. They were not necessarily the same thickness. I suppose 2 seals measuring the same width as the stock one would work in a pinch.

thanks mate! i had a look at the seals that came out my forks. there are two lips that stick out on ether side. one that is singular and the other with tow rings. i cant find a pic with two but here is one i found with three (3) for reference purposes.

If you look closely, you can see three small little lips on the one side of the seal. That's what i am referring to. the honda seal has two and the ones i can get have one. so i thought id double up, causing me to have two essentially too.

PS, its called double lip oil seals...

What is the seal in the pic for? What bike is it going on? What physically sits on top of the seal. My forks have a retaining snap ring and dust boot on top so I couldn't stack 2 seals if I wanted to.

Unless you find seals half the thickness of stock ones stacking 2 will not fit.

i alvays put a nylon spacer in..there are some ekstra space..with the new type sealing(or some of them)..so i use one ,,with dubbel lips..and a spacer before the snap ring..it work fine on my cb 550 and  cb500t

I went to Honda Pinetown (in Durban, SA) and ordered Honda P/N 91255-KBH-003 from them. This is a double-lip seal with one lip acting as a wiper. Many seals for linear movement have wipers but what makes this one different is that the wiper also has a garter-spring (as does the regular sealing lip).

I fitted them to my K1 about 10 000 km ago and haven't had any problems - but it must be said that the K1 has gaiters on it's forks and they do keep the muck off.

On my Moto Guzzis I fit double-lip seals from the local bearing agent - until I reforked my SP1000 with the forks from a 2005 Yammie R1 !

Thanks guys, my surname is Thomas, maybe we related hahaha, im from East London and out honda dealer is rubbish.

I have double checked and thats the same PN as the ones i require. i think i may contact your dealer in that case. Thanks for the heads up.

I found that the doubling-up of the seals will not work, the smallest thickness available is 7mm.
