Just bought a '79 CB650 - Pics (First Bike)
« on: July 26, 2013, 06:14:57 PM »
Made a thread a few days about what to look out for on a '79 CB650 but I don't really think it applied to this bike. Couldn't believe how clean it was. Caught the ad on craigslist as it was just posted. 1500 miles, $2100. Never owned a motorcycle or ridden one before so definitely taking it slow, but starting to get the hang of it. Last thing I want to do is drop it. Only problem is it takes a while to get off choke and when it does it idles around 4k rpm. Thing was sitting since 1994, fluids were just changed so it could prob do with a little tuning. Here are some pics.

Very nice ;D.  The 650's are very cold blooded, they take a little to get going in the morning.  Mine fires up on the first flick of the starter button, but it takes a minute or two before I can take it off choke and ride away.

+1 on cold blooded, mine can take five minutes of playing with the choke. during that time i'll also be fiddling with the idle screw on the right hand side on the carb rack.  it sounds like yours will be the same. now go knock the new off of it!!!!

Thanks guys. Just going over the shop manual now.

What exactly is the pilot screw, I know you have the idle jet and then mixture screw but I've never heard of a pilot screw.

Beautiful bike!  Looks like brand new! ;D

There's really only 2 adjustments you can do on the outside of the carbs (beside syncing)  idle air mixture and idle speed.  With the condition and mileage of that bike, I wouldn't adjust anything unless its a known problem. 650's need more choke than normal when cold (jetted lean from factory), ride it and get used to your bike before messing with it.

The "pilot screw" is a fine tuning of  the air/fuel mixture primarily at idle, and very low rpm's.

That's another thing I was considering. Before I even fiddled with any tuning I would want to eliminate any problems that could have arised from sitting.
