Any idea how to fix this... sigh
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:52:23 PM »
Welp, I pretty much hate myself right now. Removing the carbs off my '79 CB650 (I just bought that was sitting for a while) and even though I tried being as gentle as possible and made sure I didn't scratch a single thing I still managed to break something. After manhandling the carbs a bit I was able to start tilting them out. As I was pulling out I didn't notice the choke cable attachment bracket that is plastic, I guess was caught on something because I heard a snap. My heart sank into my stomach. Surely it was just a cable getting out of the way I thought but nope. Here is what I'm dealing with. At least it wasn't for nothing as the carbs are full of gunk.

The only thing I can think of is JB weld, but I really don't want to just rig it back together. Any ideas?

if it were me i'd try and rig up a little brace for it along the break and epoxy it back together. then i'd hunt for a used one, or try to fab up something out of metal. i feel your pain.

Send harisuluv a PM. He rebuilds these a lot so he'll know where to get replacement parts. He may even have something that will fit.

If it did decide to replace the part, would it involve splitting the carbs because its hard to tell how it would come off otherwise.

Will do thanks.

Yeah I think I'll probably JB weld it for now, I just hate it when something like this happens and the entire bike feels "broken".

You should be removing the carbs from the rack to clean then regardless.

Don't feel bad.  That little plastic thing has reared its ugly head around here a number of times now...

Some pics of the insides of the carbs if anyone was curious.

if its plastic i had to fix my k&n and used epoxy called     2P-10     the glue is in a little tube like crazy glue and then you get the spray can that causes it to harden in seconds. let it cure and good as new.

I had the same issue with my 650, I found a set of PD's off a 750 that were knackered, they had a metal version of that little lever.  I just had to unrack the carbs and swap it over.  It was a direct fit ;D.

Don't believe this part failure was because it was "sucky" plastic. Owner error on removal is this issue on this thread. The plastic "was OK" for 34 years on this part prior to the error.  ;)

At any rate, Honda must have rethought it because on both my '81s that part is back to metal..

If you do jb Weld it, if you can snaek a really thin nail or stiff  wire between the two pieces with the jB around it, i will be strong

Bike Bandit may have that part. It is worth checking.
