1980 CB650c Carb questions
« on: August 30, 2013, 10:27:38 AM »
Hey guys, first post here. Representing HeadKace in Phoenix, AZ!

So we are currently turning this CB in to a cafe racer. We have the bike all apart, waiting on stuff to be powder coated. Meanwhile I'm working on the carbs. I have separated the rack and in doing so found these small felt-like washers/gaskets/seals on the carb bodies where the throttle and choke shafts run through. I've looked and these are a discontinued item and have had no luck finding replacement ones.

So my questions for you guys are;
1. What is the purpose of these?

2. What are they made of?

3. Where could I find replacements?

4. Any other input or ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help guys. I hope you can help me figure out what to do here!

If yous are in good shape, reuse them. Mine are gone and there's no real difference in performance nor any air leaks. You can dab some grease on the shafts  to help seal and the added lubrication wouldn't hurt on something that's over 30 years old.

You can always make your own using some felt material and hole punches.

This is probably what your shaft seals look like.

Old seal disintegrated while removing. The brass retaining ring will lift out without damaging it if you're careful.

This is the crud that generally accumulates in the bosses.

Boss and bushing all cleaned up and ready for new seal.

New seal in place and this carburetor body is now ready for shaft install.

Throttle shaft service is without question the most exacting task you can perform on your carbs.

During install you've got to follow a strict procedure or you'll introduce binding at the throttle plates, and you won't discover it until they're back together and you try to synchronize them. Or I should say when they fail synchronize-ability.

Please don't think I'm trying to knock your abilities---far from it.

It's just that you appear to have never done this before so much caution is called for.

I created PDF covering the correct sequence for CBX carbs but the same rules apply to all carbs with felt seals.

Oh, and I've got felt shaft seals in the hundreds.

The carb you show with the new seals is a CV carb.
Are these the same seals for the PD mechanical carbs?

Yes.

I must admit to a senior moment---when I saw the year model I assumed DOHC, but the felt seals are indeed the same.

Great! I'll be in touch when I am ready to go through the carbs to get some.

Thank you everyone for your replies, OSC especially. I will be purchasing some of these seals from you soon.
