Getting mag rim for the rear... Is this dangerous?
« on: August 23, 2006, 07:23:56 PM »
Right now I'm running an SC mag on the front and a standard spoked rim on the back.  It just doesn't look right!  (and I love what the mag rim did for handling...)

So, I want to drop the spoked rim.  Problem is, the mag rim is a 16" and the spoked rim is 17".

I've got a practically new spitfire for the spoked rim.  Would it be possible to transfer the 130/90-17 tire to a 16" rim?

seriously?
I didn't think it was possible to mount anything on a rim that wasn't the same size(dia.) as the tire...   Maybe I'm wrong?

You could mount it, but it wouldn't hold air.  The bead have anything to sit on.

Then again, maybe you could use some gap rod (j/k)

I'm thinking it's probably not possible either...  But I want to make sure before I fork over the $$$ for a brand new tire (after I already forked over the $$$ for a brand new tire 2 months ago  ;D)

Yes you can fit  a 17" tyre on a 16" wheel, it'll just be a bit wobbly and you would end up brown bread. :o :o :o :o ;D

Sell tire here to someone and buy the proper tyre.

i could use a rear tire-
ine looks good, but if two years of sitting has done anytihng like what it did to the front tire, i should need a new rear post haste
what sorta dough are we looking at or a "spitfire"  sounds pricey?
cheaper than you

Well the other reason I'm changing it out is cause I picked up a metal shard that punctured the innertube.  I'd rather just go ahead and make the switch to a mag now than spend the $$ to get the new tube and repair the tire.  I picked up the front mag from a guy on Ebay that already had a good condition tire on it (funny enough, it's also a spitfire...), so I just grabbed the rear mag from the same bike.  Hopefully the tire on this one will be in just as good condition!

Spitfire rear tire is ~$80 new.  Not expensive or anything (it's a Bridgestone), but it has a nice looking aspect and tread pattern on it.  They also grip pretty good for semi-economy tires.
