CB750 Alternator Wiring - 3 Yellows Does it Matter?
« on: August 24, 2006, 04:35:52 AM »
Now that you've helped me identify my notched cover as being correct, can you tell me about these 3 yellow wires? 3 yellow males, 3 yellow females....I assume it won't matter, but something tells me to ask. Are there any measurements needed with a ohm meter or any distinction at all required to get these hooked correctly, or are they truely "random" ?

Thanks,
Gordon

Life with Kawasakis Mach III and Mack IV's has never been that easy. The 3 wires coming off the signal generator are color coded, but they stop at the engine. The wiring harness that carries the signals up to the 3 ignition coils under the tank all use the same color wires. You had to trace each cylinder's wire from the engine terminal up to the coil hook-ups using an ohmmeter or a continuity tester.

I learned the hard way that you don't just hook-up wires "just because they are the same" seems like in this case, the alternator does not care and works either way.

Thanks,
Gordon

We all agree - It does not matter which way you hook up the alternator YELLOW wires.

I think the resistance is supposed to be about 7.2 ohms...between any of the combinations of the wires

that is -  wires 1&2, 2&3, 1&3, thats irrespective of which way you have the leads connected on your multimeter

All three yellow wires deliver a phase of alternating current to the recifier and each one has it's own pair of diodes to sort out positive and negative charge. All of these feed back to the same place- the battery. So, it doesn't matter which one gets connected to which, as long as they are all connected to the rectifier. The rectifier sorts everything out from there...

NO  :o

The resistance of the FIELD COIL (White and Green) should be 7.2 ohms. Connects to the Regulator (White) and ground (green).

The resistance of the STATOR COILS (Yellow Wires)  should be 0.4 ohms between any two wires.
