CB750 piston weight
« on: October 13, 2013, 06:43:06 AM »
Decided to clean some stock pistons out of an engine up. The bad news someone installed the rings the wrong way (upside down) on some of them, mixed the rings up like two top rings for one pistons and another had 2 middle rings and 3 had 1 piece oil ring and the other 3 piece oil ring.

Anyway, got them cleaned up and 1/4 piston weights are the same but heavier then 2/3 which are the same.  By holding them you can feel the weight difference. Circlips and wrist piston out, just bare pistons.  Engine has been apart before, suffered #2 rod letting go unknown dodgy engine builder.  I'm worried about the balance of the mismatched pistons on the crank. Should I change them out so all are same weight? I've honed the bores so another set would drop straight in I'm guessing. Thanks.

Would probably be easier to source a complete set of 4.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

There are threads in piston weights and how to balance them. How to arrange the pistons, remove material might not be needed.
I followed this in my last piston setup:
1-4 goes up when 2-3 goes down.
1-4 together should have same weight as 2-3 together.
1 meet 2 and close in weight
3 meet 4        - " -
