Any interest in sohc fork assembly tool ?
« on: November 04, 2013, 02:46:01 PM »
I have an idea for a tool to aid in filling with oil, and assembling the threaded top caps. I know they are not the most difficult to do, but get harder if you add preload spacers.
Any faster cleaner safer, may help if you are working on these often
Would work as bench mount, vise mount, or on the bike.
Just checking to see if there is any interest... Looking for feedback.

There is a tool called a palm ratchet . Snap-on makes it you can push straight down while turning it . Have used it with great success .Is this what you are looking for ?

I have ways of getting them in now , but add stiffer springs and 1/2 inch of preload, they can be real tough. I could make this a h one hand , or almost one handed job, with no danger of the cap flying out. Plus it would be nice to have a way to hold them during assembly and filling.

Interesting, just took off the top triple tree and getting closer to taking off the fork, subscribed. Something for the rear shocks would also be nice.

Do you mean to dis-assemble the rear shocks?

Yes, I've had zero luck with the zip tie method I read on another thread here. What is this tool called?

It's my home made spring compressor. I went to my local hardware store and bought a 24" piece of 2" square tube, 2 pieces of 1" x 1/8" strap, and a small piece of 2" x 2" x 1/4" angle.

How it works is you secure the bottom of the shock into the lower bolt on the strap part, fit the top of the spring into a vee notch that has been cut into the angle, and lower the strap arm down and remove the spring keeper.

Total cost was about $ 15.00 and about 1 hour of time to construct. If you have a hammer, a vise, a drill, and hacksaw, you can make one yourself.

I talked to a pro mobile mechanic today, he really liked the concept...we went thru it and i explained it all to him.
One feature i had not mentioned, is it could be made to fit 35mm to 41mm or bigger, with adaptors to change the sizes, he liked the fact that it becomes mostly a one hand op..in use.. With no danger of fork cap flying out on you.

My whole intention with this was a tool for those who use it a lot of times in a year. For occasional use, it may not be worth it.
