My fiancé is going to kill me.
« on: November 16, 2013, 06:49:45 PM »
Browsing CL today at work and came across a 74 550 frame and partial motor for 300 bucks. No title, no paperwork at all. Seller says it's out of the CA dmv system. How hard is it to register this thing in CA and not have it up to safety standards? I'm planning on bobbing this one and stripping everything off it that doesn't assist in stopping or going.

I don't know about SoCal, but that's $100-$125 worth of CB550 in Chicago.

And here in so cal that's a steal for a 550. Some Junkers around here go for 2k.

I bought 2 550's this year in separate transactions, a '77 F basket case with no title and a  '75 K roller with a stuck engine, but no gauges, tank, side covers or wiring and paid $360 for both.

Fiancé bah! She's not your wife, that's when you have to worry about bringing bikes home haha. There is no saying "happy fiancé,happy life"...

Around our house as long as I don't touch the joint bank account, I spend my own money on whatever I want and the same goes for my wife. We got a good system going, I'm lucky. She rides motorcycles to so there's never a complaint if I buy bikes, in fact shes talked me I to buying one ;p

Very true. And if she doesn't forgive you, buy another bike. Start as you mean to go on or you'll be scared to take a crap without asking her first.

Crazy prices out West. My last three bikes were bought out of state for that very reason. I have found a few deals but flipped for a little profit.

All you need for a title is to drag the carcass (frame & motor) down to the CHP wherever they do VIN verifications in your area.  Registering it may take more effort/inspection, but titling it is easy.

Yeah you better establish this motorcycle buying habit so she'll be used to it once you're actually married. Break her in to the new way of life, haha.

Hahaha thank you gentlemen! Slammed a 74 550 into the back of my 85 golf and drove 59 miles home. The seller included so much extra stuff, he's a stand up guy. I now am looking for a set of piston sleeves and pistons, anyone know of a big bore kit for the 550 that sells sleeves too or is it more cost effective to buy OE used sleeves and source the BB kit?

Are the bores so damaged you think they can't be bored?

My wife has said nothing about me owning 7 bikes at the same time, but I think she would divorce me if I ever let me grow a moustache like yours.... :-)

Sig'd.

I'll be making a build thread soon to catalog this build, it'll be slow and boring though. I need to source carbs, brakes, sleeves and pistons.

"Fiance is going to kill me"  WTF? Sounds like she should become an ex-fiance before she becomes Mr, er Mrs KrautKoffin. I'm sure she's a nice lady even though she isn't trained properly. Is she like her mother?  ::)

Looking forward to watching your project. Keep us up to date  ;)

Hahah I told her I went to buy a frame and the PO 'gave' me a bunch of free stuff, and she's fine with it. The garage is really full now with my project golf, the 750 that's still in pieces, and now a 550 skeleton and bins of parts.
