allen bolt both stripped AND stuck
« on: December 12, 2013, 03:35:27 PM »
Alright I was trying to get the exhaust off and all of them came off easy except the last one. The head is stripped so the key wont fit. I can get a grip and spin it left and right but in both directions it freezes no matter how much pressure i apply and I don't want to strip the threads in the engine. any suggestions on how to proceed?

This bike is starting to get frustrating  :-\

Heat, heat and more heat. And probably some PB Blaster. Hate things like this.

Heat, penetrating oil, more heat, penetrating oil, wiggle left and right, heat, penetrating oil, PATIENCE, heat, etc. etc.etc.

Add a break for a beer in there too. Frustration = stripped thread.

If you can move it a little each way I would just keep working it back and forth while spraying PB Blaster at it. Maybe a little heat would help coax it outa there. You could maybe get an easy out to get a better grip on it. Last but not least....cut the head off & remove exhaust. Use a stud removal tool to get it out.

I would personally cut the head off, those cap heads work great for centering the bit too. You will be left with a little stump to work if it doesn't come out easily anyway. I find that usually after the head is gone it's those top three~ threads that were stuck anyway

Its stuck, but may not be stripped ...yet. Lube..work back and forth, that is about it, heat will help. Here is what happened some bits of thread or corrosion Glommed on to the threads.. If you dont get these to break loose.. Then it will strip the thread as it comes out.

I got it out using locking pliers and liquid wrench rocking it back and forth. I don't know why I made this thread, I already figured that was the best route I was just frustrated at the time. The thing is the bolt I got out is 1/2 inch longer than the rest of them and has grey goop all over the end of it.

Maybe the hole got partially stripped and they fixed it with the longer bolt. Is that grey goop hard like maybe JB weld. Be good to run a tap in there and chase those threads to clean it up and make sure all is good to go.

Could be anti-seize also, sometimes if it is gooped just on the end it doesnt go with the threads
