parting out a vehicle will bring 10x the amount of money over scrap cash.  Sorry it happened, but it's getting so bad here in NC, people are stealing the sewer covers right off the street and scrapping them. One scrap yard got caught being in Lexington,NC.

Certain group of people in Czech (ok, gypsies) will steal communication cable from railroad and burn it to get the copper out to sell for scrap.  With a bit of luck they will cause millions in damage for $100 or so in cash.   Mind boggling.
Same around here. Farmers were getting hit hard at one time on their irrigation systems. Around here a lot of it is because of one word "Meth". If they weren't stealing the copper wires and metal they would be stealing the liquid fertilizer whatever its called.  ::)

Idiots smash and grabbed a dash mounted radar detector from my brother in vegas. Dad always concealed it but bro left it on the dash. Maybe $10 from pawn, the window fix was hundreds. I'm just glad the idiots didn't rifle through a bit more and get my laptop.

No, the best here is people stealing cable for the camera and information systems for the KCScout system for the highways.
The system is all fiber optic so they cost thousands of dollars to replace the fiber optic cable that is worthless to them for copper salvage. Idiots.

You gotta know where to find them but the problem is real enough.

Always fun to hear when they try to steal the copper out of a live transformer and get fried.

My ex BIL's house burned with a tenant living there. Later someone tried to cut out the panel box, apparently forgot to check to see if it was off. It wasn't. Big arc mark on  bolt cutters left behind.

Lived in this subdivision...40-50 nice homes spread out in a wooded rural area.  50+ wooded acres between us and the next house.   Tweaker kid (meth) lived there.  My super cool next door neighbor, Lou, is a Seattle PD bike cop.    Sean, another bike rider (dirt mostly) is a Deputy with the County Sheriff.  Also has 2 HUGE German Shepards.    I felt really safe on this street   ;D  We had suspected this tweaker kid was committing these car prowls in the upper arms of the neighborhood.  One every 2-3 months.  Easily hidden in the adjoining woods until the coast was clear.

One day, after all the moms and kids busses left for school, this punka$$ decides to go down our street  :P Just so happend to be Sean's day off.  As Sean tells it, the guy starts ufking with his wifes car in the drive (cruiser was in the garage) and his Shepards ears clued him in something was going on (He's trained them bark only on command). So he got them harnessed, and ready to sprint out the door, locked and loaded.

Caught this fkr in the act, held him at gunpoint, dogs barking.  This kid pissed himself waiting for his car ride to jail  ;D

I had some bastard sneaking around my house stealing stuff over the past year.  They kept coming back, and they didn't even try to hide the fact that they were snooping around and taking stuff (leaving doors open, leaving stuff in the driveway, etc.).  Took an old dead battery out of a car I had, and an old rim that had been in an accident, stuff like that.  It was just junk they were taking, but it pissed me off that someone kept coming back over and over and didn't even try to be sneaky about it.  Bastards.

Oh, and like someone else said above, where I live you have to have a clean title to sell a car to a scrapyard (that's what I did with the junk car they took the battery from).  My guess is that your boy's car will turn up somewhere, stripped of its catalytic converter and other stuff that's easy to remove.  What sucks is if it gets parked somewhere, they'll trace your son as the owner and I wouldn't be surprised if they try to make him pay for towing charges and crap if it has to be towed as a nuisance vehicle (like if it's left in some public place or something and it has to be towed).  I would hope that once you explain that it was stolen you wouldn't have to be responsible for any towing charges or fines, but I wouldn't be surprised if at first they expect you to pay them - seems to always work that way.   >:(
