Accurate rear shocks needed for '74 CB750
« on: November 13, 2013, 07:11:26 PM »
So hopefully you guys don't hate all the questions.

I'm looking to replace my rear shocks. Someone tried to powder coat the old ones and they're pretty much shot. Z1parts has shocks that look totally different - all spring and no chrome cover. Do they expect you to reuse your cover (mine's ugly)?

Anyone have a good source of accurate reproduction shocks for my bike?

Hey
Check this link.

http://www.z1parts.net/product/cb750-sandcast-shocks

They list them as Sandcast shocks but add that they fit up to 1976.

They look like good shocks but not accurate.

Shroud, that's the word I was looking for. Seems odd to advertise a "most accurate to OEM" shock that doesn't have a shroud.

Some didn't come with that shroud from factory but most other visual cues are there. A lot of knock off when compared side to side are not similar at all even though they say they are. Like chain guard clearance for one with aftermarkets

why are you wasting your time with 100% accurate look replacement when it won't actually be accurate due to the stampings on the shock? More importantly, why do you want to foresake 40 years of suspension technolgy?

FWIW, if you actually plan to ride the bike, a set of hagons (esp ones setup for your weight by Dave Quinn motorcycles) will be a vast improvement over a pair of cheap chinese shocks that just look right. #4 on the bottom row of the above hagon pics looks the closest to stock (yes they make them in clevis bottom, and you can probably change out the lower spring perch for chrome and peel off the hagon sticker), so get a set of those and be happy when you ride the bike. The original OEM shocks for these bikes were terrible, why do you want to go back to terrible.

If you are really going for "accurate", then get a set of original shocks and recondition them, that way you will have all the correct stampings in the body and the correct narrow clevis. The originals are not rebuildable without cutting and welding just so you know.

I don't think it will hurt the value if the bike is not a show bike to have quality shocks on the bike instead of merely "accurate".

I went with rebuildable Ikons for my K3, I don't think you can rebuild Hagons.

The Hagons a good shocks, I`m running a set on my RoadGlide.  The shocks on my K5 are in good shape but I am going to put a set of Hagons on it. I`m not that worried about originality and I know the Hagon will ride better.

This is a very good point. This bike is being restored to be a rider. I guess repro accurate looking shocks could very well suck. Even if they look good.

I'll look into these.

The repro generally do suck, they are usually oversprung too. The knock off ones that most people run, myself included, are oversprung but are still better than the ancient stock ones. I couldn't get Hagons and I needed shocks so i bit the bullet but for another 100$ the Hagons are great

In the myrad of cb750s I have owned I have run Ohlins, Marzocchi, Hagons, Progressives (412s and magnums), Mullhollands, vipex, Works, Koni (alloy bodies and shields), and redwings.

Of those shocks, the only ones still available new are Ohlins, Progressives, Works, and Hagons. When you see the price of ohlins or works ($600+ starting) you will quickly realize they are an overkill option and best suited for a track racer who isn't on a budget. The 412's are only slightly nicer than the stock shocks and I attribute this to better fork oil. Plus propert weight springs were extra. The Hagons I have were far and away the best deal - valved for weight at no extra cost (a Dave Quinn feature, not every hagon dealer does this). They are an excellent shock and honestly add a lot of curb appeal to the bike as well as great riding experience. You should pair them with a set of cartridge emulators for the forks.

Shocks are a funny thing, I have never seen a good pair of shocks looked upon as a negative but I have seen people "impressed" with ohlins, marzocchi stradas, and even my hagons. My mullhollands have been one of the best riding/wearing shocks but everyone mistakes them for stock (not a bad thing) because most people don't know what a stock shock should look like anyway.

+1 on Hagons from Dave Quinn in CT. Best bang for the buck IMO

Check out Ikons too. They are similar in appearance, a bit "fatter" around, but close on first glance. Don't know much about shocks but from what I have read on this forum, just about anything is an improvement over the Honda shock.

+1 on checking out Ikons:
http://www.ikonsuspensionusa.com/

You can get them in all chrome with a cover/shroud.

I ordered a pair for my 75 CB750F (which doesn't have a stock Cover/Shroud), but when I was on the phone with them I asked about a K version and they said they can put it on there for the K bikes - but I'm not sure if the cover/shroud is the same length as stock... I'd recommend you call and ask before ordering.

I'm very happy with my shocks - adjustable rebound settings and rebuild-able (though I'm not sure I'll ever take advantage of that)
