Tips on disconnecting this
« on: October 12, 2014, 10:33:05 AM »
Hey guys. Working on my bike on an absolutely beautiful Sunday trying to get this fixed. I have been trying to get this harness off for about 10 minutes and it is driving me crazy. It is located below the key ignition. Any pointers on getting this off?

Could you draw an arrow to the harness you are referring to? Can't work out what you mean :-\

Sorry mate, harness is the wrong word. The white plastic connector there. It is the part underneath the ignition that you can reach after taking off the headlight.

It has two holes on the metal part where you push in and then pull out the plastic piece. But it's not budging.

Ah, gotcha. Probably a lot easier to remove the switch complete and have at it on the bench. Two 10mm bolts I think and it'll drop out. I wouldn't fark with it there - if it's original that plastic will be brittle so a little care is needed.

I should have thought of that first thanks for the tip. I am still having trouble disconnecting the white piece though. There is a metal button on the bottom side of the switch. What happens when you depress that button?

I may need an additional manual. The one I have does not seem to go in full detail.

There are three tabs on the white part that attach it to the other part of the switch.
Use a small screwdriver to push them out and then push down on the white portion.

Why do you want to remove the white part?  It is part of the Switch.  The harness plugs into it at right angles.  The extended finger on the white hood is a release catch for the harness plug.

I did not see your post before making my own on this subject.

Be VERY careful about removing it - if you force it you can crack the plastic that holds it together and your module will be toast.  I didn't pay attention and did this very thing.

Why do you want to remove the white part?

I replaced mine when it malfunctioned and didnt want an entire new switch with a new key [that wouldnt work the seat lock].

The point is:  If he just wants to remove the harness, the white part doesn't need removal from the switch.

Before my bike died on me in the middle of a ride, the connection was loose somewhere underneath the ignition. I know this because I had adjusted it and it would switch on and off. But now with the bike not working at all, I figured I would take a look at it first. I was told that there is a common problem with the connection and it had to be soldered. I figured I would give it a look and also clean it a bit. Still no power though. Will need to work on it later.

The type of switch you have is not prone to soldering issues, as can be found on earlier model switches.  There can be internal contact issues, though.

I thought I posted an overhaul of these switches a while back.  :-\  Or maybe I just saw one?  good luck!
