How to swap a choke butterfly without destrying anything?
« on: January 10, 2014, 11:54:06 am »
Hi Guys,

Since my #3 069A Carb on my '77 CB550F was corroded by bad fuel sitting in it, Harisuluv was able to source me a replacement #3.  The only problem is that i need to swap over my choke butterfly and linkage from the original carb.  Fortunately, all of that is in great shape.

That said, I do not have JIS heads for my drivers - although...  are the ones in the tool kits JIS?  I think they must be...

So any advice or link to a write up as to how to get this done correctly?

I am sure its been written about, and I will do a search, but I was hoping someone could head me off there.  I promise to picture document the work!

Thanks,

Gersh

Yes, the factory took kit would be JIS.

I removed mine a couple years ago without much problem and without doing anything special.

Removed mine with a Philips screwdriver. I forget the exact size, #2? File the tip of the bit down so it engages better. The screws are staked, so it takes a bit of oomph, and you may want to replace them/re-stake or use a bit of loctite.

When you go to install them back on, leave the screws a bit loose but not so loose as the plate rattles, actuate the choke a few times all the way for it to settle without any interference then finish tightening.

Maurice has got it...also be careful ...sometimes the staked screws' threads will be damaged when you take 'em out, then you can't get started when you go to put'em back in.
If it works good, it looks good...

The way you know if the screw is JIS or not is if there is a physical dimple indent in an uncut quadrant of the screw head.

Guys,

Thanks so much!  I feel pretty lazy about not searching, but I will make up for it with a pictorial step - by - step.

Those pics are great!  I never knew that about the JIS heads.

I love this place!
