Maybe so but the new ones are very popular, well liked in reviews. In fact it's even harder to find one. At least the Pikes Peak edition at over 20k is.

Very well liked on the forums especially the long haul. First sentence.

I'd just like to say that it is Steve-o's, and TT's fault that I'm trying to decide which bikes to sell so that I can buy a new Monster 796.

HA!   I'd sell a couple of my Honda's for that, Jas, but that would not be enough to cover it.

Where is tt anyway??  Bet that effin heat has gotten to him.

Yes, he is probably hiding from the heat.   Thought, that's no excuse to not be present on the forum; you can do that in air conditioned comfort.

I'm test riding the 796 tomorrow afternoon, with intent to purchase unless I hate it.
Am I crazy?

To be thorough, I think I'm going to see if I ride an FZ09 and a Street Triple at one of the two Yamaha/Triumph dealers in the area.

On the chopping block to finance it and make room:

CBR400 (too similar to the VFR400 to keep both, also one of the most valuable bikes I have besides the V7R)

Guzzi Breva 1100, after the clutch is repaired; do I really have room in my life for 3 quirky Italian bikes?    My VFR800 and R100S (when done) serve 2-up duty just fine.   Even the F650GS works well for 2up with with my daughter.    I'm not 100% sure about this yet.   I'll see how much each bike gets ridden once it is back on the road.

R100S?    Maybe.   I can always find another.   They're not that uncommon.    Maybe I'd go for a Paralever R100R at some point.

CL450 -- almost ready for sale.    I was planning to sell this one all along.

Vespa that I bought for my wife last fall?    It's been a month since she finished school, and she has shown no interest in getting her permit (which she said she would).     I paid $4k for it.      That $4k would be nice toward the Duc.

Several other vintage Hondas (most of them, actually), are planned to be sold when done, this list is just the stuff I can sell in the short term.    The only of my vintage Hondas that I plan on keeping long term are my VFR400R, '76 CB400F, and, maybe my '68 CL175 (sloper).

Yes, it does have original paint.

Here are pics before I put the correct handlebars on it.   It also now has an NOS right side control switch, a very nice condition left one, new levers and grips.

I still don't like the alien front look of these new ducs. A guy replaced the lights and electronics with the round oldskool ducati headlight and stuff... And all the way down, lower... Looks like a beast with the correct haircut

It's a '74.    I was thinking that I'd list it at $3k.    But, like anything it will be negotiable, to a point.

I agree.   I think that the 695, S2R and S4R are way better looking than the current crop, but, they all have the ethanol-caused fuel tank swelling issue.    These late model bikes seem to have corrected it, or at least the fuel tank is under a separate cover meaning replacement doesn't mean paint work.

I was either going late 90's, to early 2000's to get a metal tank, or real late to get a plastic tank that won't swell.

Also, with the used prices of the S2R 1000 and S2R800 that I was looking at, I could damned near get a used 796.   I found a left over 2013 796 for a $1,500 discount, which brings it close enough to used price that the difference is worth it to get the full two year warranty.

Don't look at those internet add prices. Most of them are bull#$%*. If the seller of a s2r or s4r wants to sell it, he will bring it down to a deal. However, there are plenty of old monster fans and riders that keep that era of these bikes classifieds pretty active. I am sure you can get a good s2r 800 for 4k. If you can, get your hands on the 1000 though. Dry clutch, better brake-suspension and juice ;)

The local Ducati pusher had a left over 2013 796 marked down $1,500.    Since the air-cooled monsters are going away, this is my last opportunity to buy a new one.   I took the bait.   Right now I have a deposit on it, and 30 days to raise the money (or take a loan).   So, I'm selling a few bikes, and whatever I don't have, I'll finance.  I'll keep selling bikes from the fleet until the whole thing is paid for.   I've wanted one for a long time now.   :D

I also test rode the Triumph Street Triple R and Yamaha FZ-09.    Both are great bikes, both faster than the 796, the Triumph felt very similar to the Duc, but the Duc has way more character, so, it won!

Sweet ride jas! Welcome to the Family. Love the color, it's the best IMO. Wonderful bikes. Yes, that's what I like about my S2R 800. Simplicity. It's been on the rack since June getting some upgrades. Have a little more to do then mount the front tire. Can only work in the Shop for a few hours.

I'm doing a final inspection tomorrow and won't take delivery until late October. Will stay on display at the Shop and be delivered after some minor upgrades. Needs tires for sure. A set of BST Carbon Fiber wheels might look good also.  :o

I'll take some super nice pictures and start a separate thread. The "brand" is what I always wanted. 145 hp in a 420 pound bike. Should be a blast.

Here is a reference picture only. Don't see many. Down under boys will probably guess right first.  ;)
