Help me put a price on this bike
« on: January 16, 2014, 07:25:43 PM »
I've got an 80 650C, I rode it all last summer but towards the end I had an oil leak around the head, oil leak from shifter seal and a tic I can't get out of the top end. Seat has the usual til in the seams, tank had some good size dents in it that were bondo filled but it's coming out. Tires and brakes are good, it's rideable but where dies one start at on a price, everything works.

Start at $3.50 mate, anything over that is profit........... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Seal is pretty cheap. Ticking could be a leaking exhaust gasket.

Price? What ever you can get.

Screw with the tire kickers and the Pawn Shop / American Pickers types, ask for $ 2800.00 - $ 3,400.00 as a running bike with papers is worth at least 2.5k.

With the increased popularity of vintage bikes, you should be able to do quite well providing the economy in Peru Indiana doesn't totally suck. Have you done a Craigslist review of used bike pricing in your area? Good place to start.

Nada looks pretty close with the condition of yours, at least around here. Says around $600.00 to $810.00 in fair to good condition.   http://www.nadaguides.com/Motorcycles/1980/Honda/CB650C-CUSTOM/Values

These sort of guides are tools of the insurance companies and do nothing to determine actual market value. It's like property assessments here in Vancouver. The place would need a wrecking ball to sell at or near BC Assesment prices.

It's a shame when the sum of the parts are worth more than the whole.

Another contribution factor is the urgency in which you need to sell it.

I have had my '81C with a recently completed head gasket replacement.  New brakes and rebuilt from the master cylinder to the caliper new brake lines all cables replaced starts right up and runs great.  Sprockets and chain. New rectifier. New ignition switch. Rode mine to the dragon and beyond less than 12K on the clock.  Mine is for sale for $1200 but I would dicker.  Mine has been at a local shop on display for 3 months.  No real offers yet but spring is coming.

$1200 ! and you would dicker?
How much would you spend to get that machine again? Bet it would be more than 1200.

From what I've been seeing lately, you are trying to appeal to the wrong crowd.... Switch bars, pull the seat off and get one of those fiberglass cafe seats for a buck fifty ,   Then ask $3000 for a cafe bike.

Are you talking now when it's 11 degrees or in 3 months when it will be 50 degrees? Now I would start around $1,800, when it's actual riding time I would bump it a few hundred. At this time of year $1,000 is probably about the right bottom line with more like $1,500 in early Spring.

How much would you pay for it or ask for it if you were selling ?

There are a lot of factors that contribute to a final listing/selling price as have been eluded to already.
January has never been the best month (except perhaps, the southern half of the US) for peak pricing.
Timing is a factor, as is local demand. I purchased a super clean, low mileage Cb550F in Sandpoint Idaho for $1000 a few years ago. Seller couldn't get a bite locally, but eBay got the job done. Today, I'm sure the final price would be higher due to the popularity of classic bikes.

Proximity to post secondary schools and universities can also bolster pricing as used motorcycles provide inexpensive student transportation. You might do well to advertise at local community colleges and universities.

They (650)  may be a little bit of a black sheep around here,  just do not do any big money or major interest around here that I know of like maybe a 750. Like the way some of their stuff can be shoved or mounted in a 550 though  ;)
