Timing Question?
« on: February 09, 2014, 02:41:15 AM »
Newbie question, when I set up to do my timing statically as the manual instructs my test light is on and goes off when the "F" is at the mark
instead of comes on at this point.
What am I doing wrong?

Fiber cam riders on the points could be worn.
If points are new, however , I don't think this suggestion would apply.
Maybe get a new points plate-the whole deal?

When the points cam opens then the circuit for 12 volts is broken. OFF
That 12v field has been released to the coils. That is correct.

It is slightly more accurate to use your ohm meter set on the ohms X 1000
scale. KEY should be off so the points don't just sizzle and burn a hole.
Another reason to use the ohms scale. why zap your brand new points repeatedly.

Make sure the leads on the ohm meter (multimeter are connected correctly).

You will know that the fiber block on the points cam follower are worn beyond limits when you have the gap set correctly but the DWELL cannot be brought into tolerance.

The points gap and the dwell have to be in tolerance at the same time.
On both sets of points.

You have to have a DWELL meter. You can get them at SEARS for about $28.00
