Found a milky white substance on my dipstick
« on: February 20, 2014, 10:51:19 AM »
After I got back from a trip to lunch I pulled the dipstick out to check the oil level and found some foamy white milky liquid on the cap part of the dipstick and there was also some smoke coming out of the oil tank. Does anybody know what could be causing this. Bike is a 1976 CB750.

It sounds like condensation in the oil tank. Do you live in a humid area or one prone to rapid temp change? I'd spend the $25 and change the oil.

You will always get that if you only ride short distances. The bike doesn't reach full operating temperature and condensation forms.
Take it for a longer run every week.

Is the bike stored outside in a wet climate? If this were a water cooled vehicle you might worry a bit but an air cooled bike nothing to worry about, just go ride it long and hard to warm the engine and dry it out.

No need to change the oil. Its just moisture, take her for a good ride!

I always pull the dipstick out quick and slip it back in before a good hard ride :)

^^This. This is the risk of starting a bike for a few minutes in the winter and shutting it down before it's truly good and warmed up. There will always be some degree of condensation and it needs to burn off. Take it out and play with it for longer!

Looks like someone else took it for a ride before you got to it!!  ;D ;D

But in all seriousness that looks like some serious moisture contamination of the oil. You will need a good long ride to get all that moisture to evaporate out of the oil.

On a side note, a few days ago I elected to do a little winter maintenance on my 550 and took the clutch cover off. I was shocked at the amount of condensation in there. There were beads of moisture everywhere like someone had splashed water inside the engine. Start it up and all that water gets mixed in with the oil.

Most drug stores have packages of new rubbers for dipsticks on their shelves. Make sure you clean the dipstick up well as that crust can become uncomfortable.... ;)

I am in savannah ga and I get the foam too if I don't ride for more than 30 minutes...lots of humidity here.  I try not to ever do that. Also I am using that dip stick with temp gauge and it's nice. A little tight of a fit but it's nice to have a general idea of my oil temp.
