insurance
« on: February 26, 2014, 07:25:50 AM »
as subject line implies im looking for insurance. was insured by progressive with a 2500 stated value policy.  bank decided to sit on my deposit  for the payment until way after deadline to continue policy.  i have no idea why they did that.
called progressive and they wont renew due to stated value policy, said it was in my policy that if i missed payment deadline policy was cancelled.

now i have to find another company that wont give me crap over a stated value policy, or crap over the bike being over 10 years old and ridden every available day.
no im not interested in slapping a classic or antique plate on her.

house, farm and trucks are insured thru farmer's.  they are kinda hedging around about bike insurance.  anyone have thiers insured with them?

plates are due in 7 days and i have to have proof of coverage to plate her.

I have geico for the new bike and hagerty for the old bikes. They had no problem with me riding the cb750 anytime I liked (otherwise there is a 2000 mile restriction) as long as I paid extra for the privilege (and by extra not that much). I went with them because it is an agreed value policy and it's $35 to add extra bikes to the policy (first one is about $350, every next bike is $35). Their agreed value minimum is $3k so when I had my GS750 I used to joke that having an accident would double my money. Seriously though I have had nothing but great service from hagerty.

Dairyland is pretty good cheap I pay 165 a year for my 750 chopper and my 82 shovel head. They will not insure a bike with a salvage title.

Hagerty is good. I switched from them only because Progressive gives me a good multi-bike discount. They also allowed me a stated value of $8,000 on my CB750.

My GTO is with Hagerty who also covers motorcycles if they are over 25 years old.  They offer roadside service for $25 extra.  They don't argue over stated value if the agent can vouch for the condition of the bike along with pics.  My bike is with Progressive.

I have Hagerty for 1 car (1967 GTO) and more bikes than I can count (1975 cb750K, 1986 BMW R80, 1965 Vespa VBB, 1972 Norton Dunstall 810 MkII, 1974 Harley Sportster, 1978 CB750F, and those are just the ones I can remember) and I have NEVER had an Antique plate for any motorcycle. I still don't. I always had a garage (even in NYC) so a garaged bike requirement was never an issue. Most of those bikes I don't ride more than 2K a year but the 750 I used to and paid for the privledge of doing it (since I had a kid I can't take a baby to daycare on a motorcycle). It's not for everybody, but based on your rant....it may not be 100% them either.

FWIW, I am glad geico sorted you out. They saved me 50% on my '06 ducati when dairyland was overcharging me by $500 a year.

Yo Matt, you might want to pull in a large jug of Jack Daniel's and see if BobbyR could set you up with one of his acquaintances. Might smooth out the big bumps a bit.

Hate to say it but just what we call PLPB here for me in Michigan. Personal Liability. If I crash the bike its on me and I have to jump on another. Never have carried any type of full claim stuff. Never have a moved a plate around either.  ;)    8)

I asked State Farm how come motorcycle insurance is so cheap and they said I am an old fart - different words :) - and they go by the amount of damage I can cause with the vehicle.

welllllllllllllllllllllll  gotta call from geico agent.  still got coverage but....................they are taking the 2 day lapse as meaning i never had coverage before, and they are gonna hold a seatbelt violation for my then 17 year old son
against me as a non properly restrained minor dependent.   Never mind he is 6-1 and 185 pounds.   also the wee minor fender bender in the truck last summer that bought the guy a new hood.     so all this adds up to 304 a year..36 a month.  thats more than double what i had for a 2200 stated value policy thru progressive that they wouldnt renew.

I really really really want to take the time to thank the bank for sitting 24 hrs on a deposit they had no business holding up in the first place. The rotten sumsbeeshes cost me a little more than 175 bucks extra year and a stated value policy.

all the bank manager had to say was..."interesting".    I wanted to hit him.

Accidents, unrestrained minors....I'm starting to see why progressive was looking to get out of that policy when they had the chance.

Kidding aside, really what did you expect? Tickets and accidents are what drive rates primarily. You had them and you expected to keep the same old rate? That's a bit unrealistic.

I'm not looking to pick a fight, and to a certain degree I agree that insurance is a bit of a racket, but there aren't many rules to the game and two big ones are no tickets and no accidents.

I have found Geico to be pretty reasonable and have renegotiated rates with them after 6 months of a clean driving record.

Had a similar problem with a bank way back before direct deposit was invented.  I deposited my paycheck (a US Govt payroll check) and about a week or so later, I had Insufficient Funds notices coming in from everywhere!  By my calculations I still had several hundred bucks in my account.  Trip to the bank showed they had no record of my deposit.  While complaining to some manager, a bank VP who happened to be walking by overheard us and stopped to see what was up.  She then stated she had that check in her in-box on her desk.  We went up and there it was, in a plastic envelope with the attached deposit slip.  She had no idea why it was there and did not know what to do with it.  I stated that the deposit slip (which was properly filled out) might have been a clue!  The bank contacted all the business' that I had bounced checks to and explained the problem was the banks and they also took care of the bounced check charges.  Checks were resubmitted and all was ok.

That being said, I think banks do have a policy where deposits made one day MIGHT not be credited to your account until the next business day.  This is usually posted somewhere, like the front door or drive up window.  This may be what snagged you.  Hope that was not the case and if not, the bank should contact your Progressive agent and try to make it right.  I have Progressive on both my bikes.

Of course my incident was over 30 years ago when customers were still people and not just account numbers.

We have State Farm for the lot of it - cars, house, life, kids - and my one motorcycle is like $12 a month from them, not sure now, it was some very small number.
State Farm won't usually cover stated value, only book value. Mine is insured through Hagerty for $40K and runs me $400/yr. They don't cover it as a daily driver or during competition.
I won't ever talk to Geico again. I was insured by them and when some other companies tried to get my business and I started comparing rates I found my Geico was much higher. I contacted them and asked why and they said it was because of all the tickets. I hadn't had any tickets in about 7 years and so I asked "what tickets?" They said the one on "this date", "this date", and "this date". I checked  my DMV record and showed no tickets during that time. Got back with Geico and asked where they got their info on the tickets, they said they got it from me. WTF, you're telling me that while I was looking for good insurance rates I told you I had tickets I never had gotten? I can see me not telling you about ones I did get but to tell you about ones I didn't get just never happened. I wanted a rebate from the high rates I had paid for the last 9 months. They refused and so I left even tough they had a much better rate for me than the old one. I went with State Farm for my Home owners, Truck, Life, etc and no one has been able to even get close to the low rates I pay. I ply went with Hagerty on the bike because SF would not insure it for it's true value, only the book on a 62 Sportster ($5400)which wouldn't cover a fraction of the bike.

For all you who had bank issues check this out. My bank is now time stamping all transactions. If you make an online payment at 1pm and then go into the bank at 2pm to make a cash deposit to cover it, it will still incur an NFS charge of $37. They no longer reconcile at close of business where they would credit all deposits before debits to balance. Economy has forced them to try and nickel and dime us to death.

Keep up the good info. I've been shopping for insurance for my bike. Something I've never done before, and my car is with that little green lizard. Esurance is an A@#hole because I live so close to Washington (where my brother lives) that they think I'm living there too. So they cancelled my policy. I said F@#$ you I'll go with someone else.
