Anyone ever chop some Mac Turnouts?
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:34:30 PM »
Man , these things are uglier than sin. Was thinking about chopping them even and doing something. I know cone engineering has all the parts and with a little welding... What would you do to keep from vomiting in your mouth everytime you look at a set on a bike? Replacing them is obvious but I'd like to think they could be salvaged/rehabbed/saved..
thoughts or anyone done this already ?Pics?

No pics, but I've seen them slash cut, and they weren't much better.  In fact, I'd say slash cuts made them worse.

If you can weld, I'd cut them off square and either cut them way short and weld a trumpet on the end for shorty chopper pipes, OR cut them back, and weld some reverse megaphones on the end, with some baffles from cone, and have a set of racy sounding 2-1.

Those turnouts are love or hate- I can't stand 'em either. :)

Attach a heat shield so they look more like side pipes.

Seriously. Those turnouts (I think they were originally marketed by jardine) were designed in the 70's to look like the sidepipes that corvettes and cobras came factory equipped with and that you could buy aftermarket for any american car. Attaching a heat shield usually makes them look slighly better and keeps your from burning something. I suggest you do like a 70's corvette style where the turnout peeks out from behind a cutout in the shield.

FWIW I don't vomit when I look at turn outs. I don't think they are "fashionable" these days but they aren't so ugly they can't be appreciated for the misguided 70's part they are. They aren't as ugly as say the header wrapped garbage "drag" pipes most cafe kids are using on their bikes (after they chopped the stock honda muffler).

I made my own cone end for a 4-1 I had. Trimmed the megaphone to fit. 3.75" megaphone tapered to just under 2.5" exit at the cone end. Made it from a computer tower using a cardboard template I made.

I like using computer towers for that stuff because whatever the coating is is weldable and doesn't burn up like paint so you don't get smoked out bad. It is the right thickness for the job too. After sanding the end product it is almost a perfect primer for the paint to adhere to

Stock airbox w/ drop in K&N, Hooker 4-1

Don't trust me alone with a claw hammer and some pliers

I use a computer tower for the sheetmetal stock for little projects like that. I don't have any pics, a buddy of mine somehow lost the muffler on a parkway :o

I usually have big sheets of sheetmetal, like 3x5 ft but the towers are nice for little odds and ends like that
