CB550 Master Cylinder Corrosion - Should I change this?
« on: March 30, 2014, 06:06:36 PM »
When I took the bike off the road in the fall, the brakes were working fine.  Not Spongy.   This photo shows inside and some kind of discoloration or corrosion.   Should I clean this up, leave it alone or replace it?   If it should be cleaned up, how did you do it?

Appreciate the advice.

Clean it. Thats part of your braking system and even if it was operating correctly, that corrosion will find its way into the MC and clog a return hole. You might try Acetone or Kero or Diesel, any decent solvent that is aluminum compatible. Some 0000 steel wool and a gentle hand. Or, you could try some aluminum foil as the abrasive rag and a solvent.

But you've done such a thorough job, you owe it to yourself on the safety gear to not skimp.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
