holy crap! batteries are dangerous!
« on: April 03, 2014, 05:04:51 AM »
I was doing some corrosion repairs to my 4 into 1 today - I had the muffler removed and the 4 into 1 back on the bike and I was angle grinding the end when suddenly there was a loud pop and smoke was coming out from under the seat! I scrambled to get the keys and open the seat to find the battery had blown four of its caps off! Even though the bike hadn't been ridden for 2 days and the battery hadn't been recently charged a spark must have ignited vapour coming out the breather tube!! - I think it would have been a bigger bang if the bike had been ridden just before...

Ahh, I love hydrogen.
I'd say you were pretty lucky/unlucky, hard to tell.  ;)
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Another way a battery can bite you is if you don't turn the power off before removing the battery charger clips from the terminals, big bang and acid in your face, I knew someone who lost an eye in those circumstances so be careful!

GEL battery has no opening and no risk for acid flowing on the bike when the bike is dropped.
No hydrogen leak either :o

Wet cell, Gel, or AGM batteries are all vented  (even sealed ones), allowing hydrogen to escape, particularly during over-charging.  They must also be able to equalize pressure difference  between outside and internal with barometric changes.

Gel and AGM are not equivalent, FYI.

Many young people at dealerships now overfill the battery acid when they put it in the battery helping to lead to these accidents.

The batteries used to be clear plastic and you could see the levels clearly marked on the battery so that it did not get overfilled.

Now many cheap motorcycle batteries are black and you cannot measure the level of the acid as easily.

Very good reading I got a lot out of that.
