Ice Racing and riding
« on: February 10, 2014, 08:37:09 PM »
Went out yesterday and today(put my work behind a bit).. But could not resist a chance to ride on ice..been about 20 or more years.
We carved out a small oval track.
Roger G and his buddy Pete brought out a Yamaha. Tracker and a KTM.
They went pretty good and I got to try out both bikes..great fun

Anyone else get out on the ice?

Most use sheet metal type screws..but the KTM had Trelleborgs with. Cast in studs that stick out further. I think they were 300 bux per tire..

Many, many moons ago when I was mechanicing in Galt they used to take Honda step through 50's pull the extraneous bits off chop them and run them as kneelers on the river in Galt it was hilarious I don't remember if they used studs or not I don't think so but am not sure. Also a small dirt bike/enduro is a blast on the snow and ice something with enough power and light enough that you can kick off yourself when you fall because you will fall thats why you pick the right conditions so it doesn't hurt too bad when you come off. Ahh memories.

In the mid-west the lakes freeze over and ice is sometimes 3 feet thick. Then they use the lakes for bike, snowmobile and even truck racing on the ice.

A good friend from Vernon used to ice race regularly.
I looked like a lot of fun. There's a good ice racing clip in "On Any Sunday"
I love that movie.

The studs are molded in when they make the tire..

Interesting.  I've seen guys use screws in motocross tires.

Dave, if you get the right conditions it allows you to ridiculous things, things that you can't do on pavement or dirt, power slide on either side and not worry about your leg or the bike, fall off deliberately to see what it's like at various points of the fall with out hurting yourself, up right 360's, under power with out having to worry about killing yourself. It makes you a better rider in normal conditions because your body remembers some of the process and compensates for the problem. It's also a huge blast. Sand would be good too except you've got clean sand out of your bike and you.
