turn signal flasher question
« on: May 08, 2014, 10:17:15 PM »
I have a 74 cb750. I have taken a bunch of stuff apart to replace a few parts including the turn signals. I removed the battery bracket and I think the turn signal flasher is attached to the rear of it suspended in a rubber holder. When trying to hook this back up the wiring diagram shows three wires going to the flasher, black, green and gray (white?). There are those three wires on the bike as well. The flasher only has 2 prongs on it though. The signals worked before I took everything apart, can't get it working now. What wires go where? Anyone have a picture of how everything is connected? Thanks for the help.

The green (ground) wire is not used, it just hangs there. Probably that's for a 3-wire flasher (and many of us use this type with LED signals) but the OEM flasher only has the two wires - power in (black) and "flashing power" out to the signal switch.

Bodi is correct, and just to add... you can get two-wire LED compatible flashers from superbrightleds and customleds.

Thanks a ton for the help.

Does it matter which wire goes to which terminal?

If you're just doing two wire... one way will make them flash, the other will make them just stay on. That was my experience.

The original flasher can be wired either way, no difference. It's just a heater in series with a thermal switch. It heats up (from the lamp current) until the thermal switch turns off, cools down with no current until the switch comes back on, repeats.
Electronic flashers will care about which way they are connected.

Get an electronic flasher - eBay has them for $2.99 with shipping.
