Faulty ignition coil?
« on: May 26, 2014, 03:24:46 PM »
Hey I've got a 1979 cb650 that's only firing two cylinders, and before I go spend over $100 on an ignition coil I'd like to ask your opinion. Cylinder 2 and 3 are dead, while the bike starts and 1 and 4 warm up. So the pulse generator and spark unit should still be good since 1 and 4 are still firing, right?

Thanks in advance, forum!

Switch coils and see if the problem goes to the 1-4 plugs. Plus the wire from the kill sw. goes to one coil then a short jumper feeds the other coil check to see if the jumper is loose or off.

Thanks! Is there some kind of visual representation of that jumper you could show me or link me to? I'm hopeless when it comes to ignition stuff.

Look at the small wires on the coil you can see it better with tank off it is black with white stripe. One wire will be from the kill sw. black & white The one you want is real short it just goes from one coil to the other coil by the blue and yellow wire. You should remove all of them and see if they are clean and tight. Do one at a time so you can get it back in the correct place. Once you look at it then it will be easy to understand.

These coils rarely go bad. How are your points and are they gapped properly?

The coil set the yellow wire goes to 2/3.  Check the points first. More likely the points
