Tell me about CB900s
« on: June 16, 2014, 01:39:32 PM »
I don't know anything about them, other than they have the Hi-Lo gear box. What's that like? Is the 900 just a bigger version of the DOHC 750? Handle & brake ok? Parts available?
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

There are 2 different models Tug, the one you refer to is the "chopperized" or "cruiser" version of the bike, the other is the CB900f which has the "normal" 5 speed box and in my opinion, is a better all round bike... ;)

The high/low box to me was sort of a gimmick but the bike is a decent tourer, as retro said the F is a better bike and a lot more fun to ride.   I brought a CB900(not an F) back to life several years ago,  had an enjoyable time riding it before returning it to my customer...Larry

I had a 900C for decades, it's apart now, but also have a 1000C and an 1100F. The F bike is a sportbike, like the 900F, but faster. It's fun in canyons and the fastest in it's day, but nothing like current sportbikes.

Between the 900C and 1000C, I really preferred the 900C. I didn't leave it stock for too long, I ended up with all the motor parts out of an 1100 motor in it and added Megacycle cams, and MSD ignition, and Smoothbores. It was a handful. That was in the 80s and 90s.

I did tour around on it, and I must say, if you want to go anywhere, the big Customs (the C in 900C is for Custom) are MUCH better than the Fs. My Customs are dressers, so they are suitable for traveling with the Interstate fairing and luggage. I used it to commute on and get groceries too. Let's see you do that on a random 900F. I wouldn't really care to have a 900C without the fairing and luggage though, it's not a great as a sportbike. It does take a bit of nerve to keep up with the guys in the canyons.

The 2 speed behind the regular 5 speed was maybe kind of an OBTW gimmick, but they needed a jackshaft to get the output of the motor to the other side of the bike so they could use the Goldwing rear end. While doing it, they added an overdrive ratio which is nice for cruising, and still keeps the real low first gear ratio. I gives a nice spread of ratios available without building a new tranny. And since with a shafty, you don't just change sprockets to get a whole new range, it actually worked well enough. In 1st low, it really jumps out of the hole, even with all the fairing and luggage on it... even more so with over 120hp from a hot-rodded 1100F motor.

I really don't understand why so many in the world (manufacturers included) believe you need a ridiculously relaxed riding position to go touring.  I have ridden Ekpent's nice, original 900f.  It is very comfortable, handles and brakes competently for it's age, and the motor is powerful but mild almost to the point of being boring (read that as it will flat smoke most any sohc without you even noticing anything is happening)  The f is a great looking bike too...the c?   ugggo

C not so pretty but with a Ontario 1002 kit( how I first met Kaz) 33 smoothbores, Dyna ignition, Dyna coils, H/P clutch, Megacycle cams, maybe Kaz's , have to check with original owner.K&N's, Yoshi pipe or Bassani, C's could win money on street...but then the 1100F came out and away went the C! I found this 82 900F in upstate NY; It has become my favorite ride.  Longest trip so far is 1100 miles in 3 days to Birmingham Alabama and back.  Many miles with the spedo maxed out which is limited to 85mph by government idiots.

I have ridden it about 5K miles since I got it back on the road.  I see a fair number of nice F & C models out there on the roads in western NC.  The C is a lot lower at the butt, more of a cruiser I guess.  I have never felt I need ed a lower gear but I have only done a few miles with a passenger.

It will lug to 1500 in 5th and pull away with out a jerk, it will pass two cars on the two lane faster than my wife cares to see me disappear...Nice ride holds a line in the corner while providing a smooth ride on North Carolina two lanes.

It had been my intention to buy a new 1100F in 2010, Honda chose to let the rest of the world have it first, they can KMA now, this is a great substitute.

Here's a link to another CB900 thread mate, I'm obviously not a fan, but I was spoiled with much better DOHC bikes from Kawasaki and Suzuki before I bought it, and so the CB900F I had was just a disappointment. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Thanks, I enjoyed bringing it back to this condition.

An 83 1100F would be a nice find.  Maybe when I finish the 67 450.
